Found a LOT of purple springtail in my yard today. And just wanna know what species. I'm in San Diego, CA
Wish I knew my Collembola better... I've tried doing identification after obtaining some from berlese funnels and all I desired keying them to was family... you will probably need an expert to get them to species unless there is one that is particularly abundant in that area. They have similar ecological roles; aside from knowing the species just to know, there shouldn't be much variation in behavior, feeding habits, etc from a given sample in my opinion.

...Onychiuridae? Can't tell what the setae look like or whether or not the eyes are present... looks like they are there.

The Hypogastrura and Shoettella look a lot like them in appearance.

Jeff, thanks for the replies.
Seems like a lot of people are agreeing with Hypogastrura sp.
