Hey eveyrone name is mike. Recently setup an aquarium and decided to get my 1st RETF. Just got him today and tonight is my 1st night with one. I fed him around 11:30 pm. He ate 2 crickets and then commenced to run around my aquarium. I got up to use the bath room and decided to mist him. I noticed he was not green anymore... he was like a dark brown, reddish, purple color. Is this color change normal? He is still moving around and acting fine as far as I can tell. Thanks in advanced for all the help![]()
Hi there, welcome to the forum. Im sorry but I have no experience with Red eyed tree frogs but im thinking this could be due to the temperature. What is the temp and humidity level in there now? The temperature should be Day: 26-28 °C Night: 22-24 °C .
Reading the care sheet to the left of your screen may help you. It's great that your frog is eating because it shows to me that it is not too stressed out with the shift and being in the new environment.
There are lots of Red eyed tree frog owners on this forum so help wont be far away.
Can you please select your country as it will also help with helping you.
The temperature at the moment is 73F so its good. the humidity is around 65-70 ish. and I have a fan that helps circulate the air a bit (computer fan). I saw some pics on this forum a few seconds ago and a guy had them the same color and no one seemed to worried about it. ill make sure to change my location thingy. Thanks![]()
This is the image I found on the forum that resembles the color of my frog. This should help.![]()
The temp should be Day: 78-82 °F; Night: 71-75 °F. Your temp is ok for the evening. Red eyed tree frogs do change colour to blend in with their environment so its possibly just that. Are you able to post a photo of your frog and enclosure?
Heres 3 pictures. One of the tank, one of the frog this afternoon around 2 or so. and the last is his color right now. i took his picture and he was alert and moving around.

The dark brownish-purple is a nighttime color change. I have A.moreletii and the CB juveniles turn this color at night and back to green in the daytime. My WC ones are adults and they do not change. This is one of the things I am recording while studying them. I am curious to see if the CB ones change color when they become adults and if it's the females or males that change. Right now both sexes do. Anyway, yes this is normal.
The only clear one I have of his head is this one. Hes sleeping right now so if this picture is not good enough ill take one tonight while hes wide awake.
This is his color today

Glad every things OK Mike. I hope Paul can tell you if you have a male or female.
Thanks Ebony. I kinda hope its a female. I like the fact that they are usually bigger.@ Paul, Do these frogs get darker green as they age? I would also like to thank everyone for the fast responses.
It is way too young to sex. They stay the same colour as they mature, darkening after dark. I sold six of these last Sunday and traded ten of them today for a female blue dart (and supplies). So Black Jungle has red-eyes for sale.
I thought it was wayyyy to young as well. He/she is only 5-6 weeks old. I got him from Joshs Frogs. He seemed like a good person to buy from and packaged the frog VERY well. When I find out the sex you should hook me up with the opposite sex RETF for a good price,![]()
. This is my first RETF. Ive kept several green tree frogs found in my area but that is about it. I just recently got some internship money and had to have my dream pet
. This thread is all off topic lol. Thanks again to everyone here who has helped me. This is by far the best forum for frog related questions, help, or anything concerning them.
Glad you like it here. If you don't mind, go to the testimonials section and tell everyone how good Josh's frogs treated you. Thanks
