When I see frogs in situations like this it makes me want to buy another couple of terrariums to properly house them. But that's what you get when you go into a pet shop that's a large scale cooperation.

One of the small local shops nearby always has fire-bellied newts in with african clawed frogs. Another keeps a fire-bellied toad in with some kind of asian crab. Neither seem like a terrific idea to me.

On the other hand, I've never seen frogs mixed in the petsmarts I've been to. I've never seen more than 2 frogs at any given petsmart though, so it might just be the individual store or the timing of my visit.

Rescuing poorly kept animals seems like a good idea, but they'll probably just fill up the space again with new ones and are rewarded with a sale.

I'm often conflicted when visiting pet stores. On one hand sometimes there is a really neat critter being cared for properly and also have found some great bargains (a battery operated mister for $7.) On the other hand, really poor management with dead fish, dirty setups and poor advice. The local reptile store is crowded, old, sometimes a little untidy but run by a really expert family who know their stuff. If the water bowl gets a little yucky or the glass inside a tank is not sparkling it is because they operate on a tight budget, use only family members, and thus stay open, keep reliable hours and are successful.

This makes me so mad, I could rant for hours. I am not impressed with any of the pet stores near my home, but I never would expect to be.

It's really a **** shoot with pet stores. I doubt they did it on purpose wanting someone to buy them, but sometimes you never know.

Especially with Petco and Petsmart, they very rarely ever someone there with any knowledge in charge or just taking care of their animals. Especially the reptile and aquatic sections.

Luckily their is one pet store near me that is a mom and pop pet store. They actually create proper environments for their animals, all CB, they even get all their dogs, rabbits and cats from local breeders and/or rescue groups. Also they have a great selection of feed items (blackworms, earthworms, waxworms, hornworms, crickets and sometimes roaches). But then again this is by no means the NORM. Plus this isn't a giant corporation like Petstupid..I mean Petsmart and Petkill...I mean Petco.
