That's a very good question, and it all depends on you, how committed you will be to your frog, and various other elements.

I'm not exactly sure how to answer this myself, so I'm going to link you to a few good articles and let the more experienced members of the Forum give you a hand as well.

If you can find them young or as a tadpole Lithobates palustirs makes a great beginner frog. Though they are somewhat shy they make interesting subjects when housed in a medium or large naturalistic vivarium. Take note that their skin secretions are toxic and they must be housed individually, not with other species. Also they are not to be handled since their secretions can cause a slight burning sensation of the skin. Another great beginner subject would be Leopard frogs (Rana spp.). Their care is very similar to Lithobates palustris. You can easily obtain Leopard frog tadpoles through pet stores that sell feeder goldfish. The tads often come in with the shipments of feeder fish. My local pet store gives the tads way for free since it is illegal to sell native species. Whatever species of frogs or toads you choose to keep it is important to do thorough research on your chosen subject BEFORE bringing the animal home.I suggest picking up a copy of "Frogs and Toads" by Devin Edmonds to begin your research. Also keep in mind that frogs and toads can live in excess of 5 years with proper care and are not to be released into the wild (especially non-native species). Good luck!

In my opinion the southern bell frog/growling grass frog is a good beginner frog. Best to get them as tadpoles or froglets as they will be more adapted to life in captivity.

What Australian state are you in as the licensing requirement vary from state to state? Do you want a frog that doesn't require a license?

You can't keep a growling grass frog without a permit in Australia.
