Default Greetings from High Point, NC

I'm new to frogs. I fell into it when my mom had tree frogs lay tons of eggs in her rain barrel. I've never done the tadpole to frog thing in school, so I took the eggs and watched them develop. Most grew into frogs and went on their merry way, but about 200 remained tadpoles into the fall. So instead of dumping them outside, I brought them in. I got a crash course on raising and feeding those little buggers (that what my husband says they look like) and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I recently donated all but 5 to the local YMCA Summer Camp's new nature center. The house was feeling empty and I saw someone selling an FBT really cheap on Craigslist so I bought it. Skittish, crazy fellow. Hubby suggested Habanero which I shortened to Nero - like the crazy Roman emperor. Then I learned that FBT are social animals so I went to Petsmart and bought another one. This one is the complete opposite so we named it Mellow Mango. Yes, together, they make Mango Habanero - our favorite hot wing sauce! LOL! But Mango hasn't eaten in the past week. He's very lethargic and I can't tell if that's his personality or if something is wrong. After reading up on Petsmart and how they may acquire these frogs from the wild instead of breeders, I wonder if he's sad about being in captivity. I know I'm sad for him if that is true. Anyway, I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow to look him over and maybe even force feed him some red wigglers.

So that's my story. If I'm successful with these two, I look forward to venturing into the gorgeous dart frogs!

Hello and welcome to FF! Please don't feed Red Wrigglers to frogs . Their slime is foul tasting and will teach frogs to stay away from worms. Force feeding them RWs is akin to frog torture .

Please read this excellent care article and ensure all their enclosure parameters are being met: Frog Forum - Fire-Bellied Toad Care and Breeding - Bombina orientalis and relatives. The below questions should help get you prepared to provide good information to your vet. Also. if you post answers we can try and point out any problem areas. Good luck !

    “Trouble in the Frog Enclosure”

The following information will be very helpful if provided when requesting assistance with either your frog or enclosure. To help with your questions, please utilize the below list and post the information in the proper forum area to get advice from FF members that keep the same frog. This will allow for little confusion and a faster more informed response.

    1. Size of enclosure

    2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size differences

    3. Humidity

    4. Temperature

    5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish

    6. Materials used for substrate

    8. Main food source

    9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often)

    10. Lighting

    11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure

    12. When is the last time he/she ate

    13. Have you found poop lately

    14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)

    15. How old is the frog

    16. How long have you owned him/her

    17. Is the frog wild caught or captive bred

    18. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats

    19. How often the frog is handled

    20. Is the enclosure kept in a high or low traffic area

    21. Describe enclosure maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc)

I know NOTHING about FB, but if you need a great frog Vet there's a clinic in Clemmons that has two Dr's that know frogs. I'm just down the road from you in W-S.

I followed your advice, Carlos, and have switched my vermicompost to European Nightcrawlers instead of redworms. I'm excited that I can do double duty with these new worms! Thanks for the heads up!
