    Default Leucs n' Tincs

I will be breeding darts in the future and can't find any info on this question!

Can I keep Dendrobates Leucomelas & Tinctorius FROGLETS together? It would just be space efficient.

    Hi,
Yes, this is a big question w/ lots and lots of answers and opinions.
The simple...and common answer is .........No.

Lets consider ...why you are wondering?
If you are stuck for space...and want to keep these 2 species...
well.... then you will have to get more enclosures, you will need more space !

    I'll cut to the chase.
Some VERY experienced PDF keepers can pull this off, but you will need a huge tank ---like a zoo would have.
However, this would never be done for breeding purposes ( breeders do not mix )
You need to consider ...why...you want to mix?

Sorry...IMO... saving space should not be a reason to mix.

    Just get more tanks !!!

I think you might have misunderstood me when you said breeders do not mix.

These species breeder's/adults generally will have their own enclosure, and will not be mixed.
I want to mix the babies temporarily and sell them before they grow territorial (if they do i know for sure to move them, regardeless if they are mixed or not)

But if you fully understood me, then multiple enclosures it is

    Hi,
    I would not mix 2 species in grow-out enclosures/containers.

I would not mix the offspring ( of the same species )
from different enclosures in the same grow out containers.

Too risky regarding spreading all the bugs we worry about.

If space is an issue, just keep the froglets in plastic sweater boxes. Quite a lot of breeders do that.

Space and efficiency...I have tried thinking of all the ways I could make my tadpole and froglet rearing easier, but some things can't be changed too much. I used to raise Tarantulas and Scorpions so I can relate to your questions. It's quite a daunting task to find your tarantula's egg sac broken open and there's 400-600 spiderlings that need to be housed and fed individually in deli cups.

This last summer I was dealing with close to fifty Leuc froglets and all I could come up with was using Rubbermaid/Sterilite tubs that I set up like a vivarium. I could see in and they were relatively portable.

Mixing the two froglets for a short period of time? I've never read of anyone doing it and I've read quite a bit about froglet care. Maybe they would get along, maybe not. I myself would not do it for the reasons mentioned above.

    Have you seen these?

128 oz Round Container and Lid (10 pack) - Round Animal Display Containers | Josh's Frogs

If you should purchase something like these ( available in shoe box size and sweater box size ---as Bill mentioned), be sure the lids sits on the box nicely.

Sterilite 6 Quart Plastic Shoe Box: 6-qt Clear Shoebox 1642

I believe the photo of Josh's is all containers / with smaller containers inside them ... holding tadpoles? But not certain?

reminder: Tinc tads need be raised individually until they- at least- have their front legs. Only at that point
( when absorbing their tails and not eating) can be put together. They are cannibalistic. I believe most people leave them separate even longer ....until they are eating/ readily on their own. Also, I believe they secrete a hormone that will inhibit the growth of other tads if sharing a 'tad container'.

Yes, Josh's keeps individual containers in those boxes on the racks. And yes, tincs do indeed secrete a hormone which prevents other tads from developing completely. I believe Don Lisk had a thread about that somewhere on here. As well as a post about how important tannins are to dart frog development.

Hello and welcome to FF! Agree with Lynn and Bill's recommendations. The idea of keeping froglets together might seem more convenient; but when considering the possible losses and growth issues, it's efficiency is questionable. Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
