    Hey all,

My dad's fiancé would like to keep a toad(s). What are some good beginner species to keep? What are start up costs, food sources, lighting, ect.

Well, I'm not sure if she wants to do an aquatic set up. Are there any good land species? What about good beginner frogs?

If you dont want aquatic, Bufo toads would be a good option, Frog Forum - Toad Basics - Keeping ground-dwelling Toads. A care sheet for Bufo, Anaxyrus, Spea, Scaphiopus, Ollotis, Alytes, Pelobates Good beginner frogs would be Pacman frogs and some species of tree frogs like Whites tree frogs and Green tree frogs (Hyla cinerea)

I love to go with native species, and you have several in KS. You've got from the larger American to the cute little Green toads. I would say to good start up price would be around $100 not including the toad(s). I keep Southern & Fowlers and they are great members of the family.

Hi Dakota! From the second link Brian posted (pot no. 4); you can see setting up a ground toad enclosure can be vary basic if you use a 20L aquarium (watch local Petco for $1 a gal. sale) or a clear Sterilyte type container. Agree with Gail that native species are very cool. Getting them young or as tadpoles helps them aclimate to captivity.

Most important thing is to use dechlorinated tap water for it's bath and for mixing with shredded coco substrate. Do include a slab of cork bark or similar for a hideout. Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
