Inflate Themselves With Air?

My pep does a cute little "orif" kinda sound when I dig him up to do his weekly bath and substrate clean.
But he's never barked or screamed.
He does croak at odd times.

Yes they do and spade foot toads are one of those such amphibians.

It's just air as he will slim down and then appear "fat" again. These are such "cool" animals. It must be something to have one that's the size of a dinner plate.

It's a task to feed the big ones even from tongs. They can still get your fingers. Or half a hand.
