hi all I got a cute green C.cranwelli froglet yesterday from petsmart (they couldn't have had it for long because I was there last week and it wasn't). problem is, I am offering it red wrigglers and it STILL hasn't eaten. it's settled into the dirt in its cage but i'm worried that it wont eat
K first off give it a couple more days to adjust to its new home. Second red wigglers secrete a nasty tasting mucus when threatened and your frog will most likely spit it out. You want nightcrawlers. When offering worms use tongs and gently rub the frogs lips with the worm.
so THAT'S why my toadlets always spit out the pieces of red wiggler!! I have night crawlers I just figured they were too thick
Make sure the worm chunks are no longer than the frog SVL. I personally prefer worm chunks half the length of the frog though.
Hello Alex! Get rid of the RWs; they taste bad. You can try to feed cut off pieces of night crawlers; however, after the bad experience with RWs, frog might refuse them. For a baby, cut them around mouth size from the worm's pointy end. If it refuses them; try with either gut loaded crickets (carrots, lettuce, cherios) or roaches sized same as distance between frogs eyes. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Most froglets will not take worms right away. Start off with small crickets then try night crawlers after the froglet is established on crickets.
Dan and Carlos are correct about Red Wigglers. These composting worms secrete a noxious toxin when injured or threatened. They are safe for the frog to eat because the toxin is not poison to the frog unlike it is when some snakes eat them. The only way to avoid them secreting tbe toxin is by dipping them in dechlorinated water to rinse them off and then dry them with a paper towel. They also must be offered whole and uninjured or they will secrete the yellow toxic mucus. Not only does it taste bad, but it also smells bad. You can smell it once they secrete it.
I would try crickets first since that is most likely what Petsmart was offering.
someone on instagram said I should rub food on the side of the jaw (I was rubbing it on the chin because this is how I get my firebellies to bite) so I took a chunk of nightcrawler and rubbed it on the side of its jaw and it ate!! so happy my baby is eating finally!!
Welcome to the wonderful world of being a frog parent.
Don't be surprised or ashamed of the joy of the first poop either. LOL
OK I personally wouldn't have taken it that far but to each their own.![]()
