Questions about whites tree frog.

I got my whites on Monday and he/she is doing well and eating. I want to attach a heat mat onto the side of the exo terra for a nice warm spot but how will he know if it's warm because I thought amphibians and reptiles couldn't sense heat. I'm just wondering if he would ever bother to use it.

Don't worry they will go wherever they find a comfortable spot.
And they most defiantly can sense heat.
Please do use some kind of controller to regulate the heat pad.

Sensor placement is critical.
I placed mine on the middle of the back of the terrarium opposite from the placement of the heat pad
or any other source of heat.

Also avoid misting or getting the sensor wet at all costs it will cause a error with the controller and it will not function.

Also I wouldn't depend on a heat mat for heating the entire enclosure.

I use a combination of ceramic heat emitters and heat pads.

My concern with heat pads on the sides of tanks is the frogs burning their tender little bellies, that is unless you have something covering it. I use red & black light bulbs on one end of the viv. Some times they move to right underneath it, other times not so close.

If you place the Tstat probe in the viv wouldn't it just run the heat pad full bore untill the enclosure is a certain temp not really monitor the temp of the heat pad itself, allowing it to get hot enough to burn still. I know for my heat pad for my ball python I have the probe stuck in between the heat pad and the glass so it controls the temp of the pad not the enclosure.

I already have a bulb heating the tank it's just I wanted to add the heat mat as a bit of extra warmth even though it's not necessary. I'm not the kind of person who sets up the enclosure after buying the animal just to find that something isn't right.

I think I'll get a heat mat which has a temperature control thingy on it just incase. I just moved the frog into the room I keep all my invertebrates in as well so it may not even need that extra heat because that room is already pretty warm.

Depends on the heating pad,

The zoomed pads have a safety cutoff I am not sure at what temp.
But the plastic that the pads are made of can't take high heat.

The max I have had a zoomed mini get up to was 110F and the max a zoomed medium was 120F
So if you are really concerned use a Rheostat and monitor the temp of the glass with a digital probe stuck to the glass with
some putty or tape.
and slowly increase the voltage until you get 80F make sure to make small adjustments and wait at least 10 min after each adjustment so you don't over shoot the target temp. also as the room temp changes the temp of the mat will change also.
so it is a good thing to keep an eye on it every once and a while.

and you should be good.

Now heat tape is another story all together it will go well above 120F and will cause burns.
