Talking Just got my pacman frog!!!!!!!

I just got my albino pacman frog and he is soooooooo cutie! When I got him the pet store gave me a paper with info on him and it contradicted a couple of the things I thought about him. I was hoping some of you guys may be able I help me. Thanks for reading and I hope to hear your answers below.

    Questions:
    1. It says I need UVB but online it says that I don't. Should I get one just in case?
    2. Is it ok if I use a garage light instead of a expensive terrarium dedicated light fixture?
    3. They said they feed him one pinkie mice a week even though he is just a newborn. Is this ok?
    4. Are pinkie mice dead or are they still alive?

Thank you guys so much for reading all of this and once again I hope to see your answers below!

    1) uvb can damage an albinos eyes and skin.

    2) you'll have to be more specific....What type of garage light are you talking about? are you talking about using a
garage light for heat or just light?

    3) Pinky mice are high in fat and so are unsuitable for a staple diet because liver problems can develop. Once a month as a treat is ok, but not until the frog is 2.5 in SVL (snout to vent length).

    4) You can find pinky mice both alive and frozen. Frozen are easier to find and more humane.

Make sure to read the care sheet found here: http://www.frogforum.net/care-sheet-...ubmission.html

No fluorescent lights. You can use incandescent bulbs, but nothing in a daylight bulb. Infrared and Ceramic Heat Emitters are fine. Like Desertheat said Albinos are extremely sensitive to light and can be harmed by UV radiation.

Stop right there! Do not use uvb/uvb on your frog. First off these frogs are nocturnal they metabolize calcium to thier bones with vitamin D3 found in your calcium dust. Second your frog is albino, the uvb and bright light will damage your frogs eyes and also damage its skin. Third, 99 percent of pet store clerks know absolutely nothing about the animals they sell. Obviously he gave you an incorrect care sheet.

Well, here we go again with some pet store passing bogus information, it happens all the time. OK, first thing is to read the forum's care article in here: Frog Forum - Pacman and Horned Frogs - Ceratophrys - Care and Breeding. Below discussed items are very important to keep frog healthy.

    - Water for both mixing with substrate (Plantation Soil, or EcoEarth) should be dechlorinated tap (Seachem Prime works great). You can use distilled water for misting; but do avoid spraying frog.

    - Babies and juvies smaller than 3 in. should be kept in a small enclosure (not a 10G or similar). Otherwise they will stress out and stop feeding.

    - Day temp should be 82F for babies and 82-84F for juvies and adults. That can drop a few degrees at night. Keep humidity between 70-80%.

    - Best food is earthworms, can get night crawlers at Walmart and local bait shops (not dyed ones). Will need to cut (from pointy end) small mouth size pieces for babies. Once they grow to 2 in. can feed pieces as long as frogs. 3 in. and above can tackle a whole worm. Crickets should be gut loaded with carrots, lettuce, and cherios for 24-48 hours before feeding. Can also feed Dubias and other feeder roaches. You do not need to feed mice and if doing so, must be small to avoid a big one rotting undigested inside your frog and not more than one monthly.

Pacmans are nocturnal and do not need anything more than ambient light for their day/night cycle. Daylight type bulbs will hurt albino's. Red bulbs and ceramic heat emitters are OK for all Pacmans as a source of heat.

    - Change water bath daily even if clean. Spot clean any feces daily and change substrate once a month. Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Well..... looks like i have a couple(sarcasm for "a lot") of things to fix. I have 2 bearded dragons and i feed them Superworms. Is there anyway that i could feed them to the Pacman frog if i cut them up? Also how fast do they grow?

The following information will be very helpful if provided when requesting assistance with either your frog or enclosure. To help with your questions, please utilize the below list and post the information in the proper forum area to get advice from FF members that keep the same frog. This will allow for little confusion and a faster more informed response.

Okay here we go. These frogs are very sensitive to how they need to be set up.

    1. Your frog is very young right now. At your frogs size he needs to be in a small critter keeper. Enclosures that are too big will stress out the frog and might stop eating. Also make sure three sides of the enclosure is covered with a natural colored backround.
    2. Humidity needs to stay about 80 percent. You really need to get humidity/ temp levels correct.
    4. Day time temps need to be 82-84 degrees and night time temps should be 77-78 degrees. Make sure that all your heat sources are on one side of the enclosure so that you have a warm side and a cooler side.

    5. All water used needs to be treated with a dechlorinator of some sort. Make sure the water in the water dish is no deeper than chin level.
    6. Water used to break up the eco earth needs to be treated also.
    7. These frogs burrow to hide. Take out the Pringles can and the KFC. They are not properly cleaned and most likely have residual chemicals that can poison your frog.
    8. I recommend nightcrawlers as a staple food source. Gut loaded crickets. Just make sure you dust and feed nightly after lights out. Mice should only be fed around once a month max. They are bad for the frog and have a terrible amount of fats.
    9. Calcium d3 dust three times a week, and use the vitamins once a week. Skip a day in between calcium days and vitamin days.
10 do not use and white lights or uvb lights. Use either red incandescent bulb or ceramic heat emitter. No lights over 59 watts. I use all 49 watt light bulbs.
    12. No more mice till next month around the same time.
    18. Either gut loaded crickets, dubia roaches, nightcrawlers (cut to the appropriate size). Prey items should be about the distance between the frogs eyes. Worms can be about half the length of your frog. Feed every night till the frog refuses more or 15mins pass. Whatever comes first. No super worms or meal worms. Your frog might not eat for a few days because it needs to settle in.
    20. Traffic as in an area of your house that people dont go into that much.
You have a lot of work ahead of you. Please hurry and make the corrections and get back here if you have any questions. Ill be on here all day off and on so ill respond within the hour. Good luck.

So basically i need to get a couple of things and switch him to a critter cage? So far here's what i need to get:
    Backgrounds,
    Hydrogemeter(Digital)
    Thermometer(Digital)
    Water Dish
    Eco earth

Can you think of anything else?

Get digital temp/ humidity gauge. The analog ones are junk. As for the backgrounds they can be cardboard construction paper or something like that. Did you get your vitamin dust and calcium d3 dust yet? And there red incandescent bulbs. You can place the critter keeper inside your 15 gallon tank.

Trust me, i kbnow to get digital. Still have to get vitamin dust yet so theres something i can add. I just set up the soil in the critter cage and i was just wondering if i needed to put a small water dish in there with him? Oh, the pet store fed him a pinkie right before i bought him, should i wait like 3 or so days before i feed him again since a pinkie is a bit to big?

Dont forget food get some small crickets for now. We can work on tong feeding with wirms later.

  17. #16

Yes they need a water dish. They sometimes go for a soak at night. And also many frogs like to poop in their dish. Make sure the frog gets the dish changed every day with fresh treated water. Sometimes its easier to just place a critter keeper in a larger enclosure to get the correct temps and humidity.
