    Default Glass feeding bowl

    Hey everybody,

My frog won't eat from the glass feeding bowl I placed into the cage. It's about three inches tall, and the circumference is about six inches. I've placed crickets in there before (and also worms occasionally), but they never disappear. Fortunately, though, they don't get out of the bowl either. So recently, I've simply been letting the crickets run loose in the cage so the frog (Hyla Cinerea) will get something to eat (even though some crickets do escape, he is getting food because he has a healthy weight). So all in all, any ideas as to why the frog isn't eating out of the bowl? It'd be great if he would, as the problems with the crickets escaping (or disappearing into the substrate) would end, and I'd know for sure how much he is eating...

    Thanks!

Maybe want to try a smaller bowl 2 in. in height and around 4 in. across. Should cost very little at a dollar store. If frog does not eat from it either; well guess it is wary of the bowl.

Also; do you keep bowl inside enclosure all to time and add the feeders to it; or do you remove the bowl and just use it when offering food? If the later; recommend make bowl a permanent enclosure feature and just clean it before feeding. Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

One question is the glass clear.
I have had this problem with my whites tree frogs.
They were perplexed that they could see the crickets moving in side the bowl but couldn't
eat them though the glass. They kept head butting the glass and tongue striking the bowl.

So I buried the bowl into the substrate so the lip edge of the bowl is almost flush with the
    substrate.
    And let the feast commence.'

And I also found out that using a white bowl that contrasts better with the feeders makes the frogs
    find the feeders easier.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick replies. The bowl isn't removed from the enclosure before feeding; it is a permanent feature. I will see if I can find a smaller bowl. Louis, yes, the bowl is clear (it's actually a glass for drinking out of). I'll bury it in the substrate and see how that works, and also see about the color of the bowl...

    Thank you so much!

The new bowl I put in has been working well since I put it in a little while ago. The frog is eating out of it. Thank you for all the help!

Yes, my bullfrog did the same thing... rammed right into the glass. I had to bury his too.

Great news! Congrats! It's so much easier with the bowl method.

Yep just like Lynn kept telling me and Heather is saying here. Persistence is key due to a shortage of Crickets in my area (never thought I would type those words together lol) we had to buy pinhead crickets and I was convinced more of them were hiding in the substrate than hiding in my frogs bellies so last night I put them in a little bowl and watched as Roy and June would look at it and then each other and then back at the bowl. Finally Roy Manned up and went over and took a mouth full of crickets like a boss. June followed suit. It was cute, for like 4 mins they were on a branch above the bowl taking turns eating.

I then should add that last night June was clearly stalking a cricket and roy jumped from across the terrarium and stole it. Guess everyone is selfish sometimes lol. Last night was the first time in 4 days they had the proper sized crickets so I am sure they were hungry.
