Hey guys , basically my boyfriend bought me 2 albino african clawed frogs around 2 months ago and i house them in a 15/20gal tank.
basically we have seen a huge increase in size by "squish" and a less noticeable size in "squash".
my questions are:
1. is this a gender related
2. could they be seperate species mixed at the store.
3. could the size difference end up in oversizing or cannibalism.
1. It is possible. Females are significantly larger than males.
2. African Dwarf Frogs are often mistaken for African Clawed frogs.
3. How much of a size difference is there between the two? I have kept ACF froglets of slightly different sizes together in the past, and the larger ones didn't bother the smaller ones as long as they were all well fed.
Could you please post pictures? By looking at a picture, I can identify the species, possibly the gender, and tell you if there is too great of a size difference to safely house them together.
Only Xenopus laevis comes in an albino form. So I gurantee there all laevis.
I believe Terry posted a pictures of the gender differences in this species.
No problem.
there are massive differences between the size of matured females and males....females can look 60% larger than males!!
males typically get up to 3.5-4" in body length and females can get 6" + in body length!
here is a good visual for you...
female on the right, male on the left

The picture above is squishthe larger of the 2 frogs.
I know some have asked to the see the size difference, I took a photo today. The advise everyone has given me as helped I do think they are different sex.

It looks like to me that both frogs are female. There are two sexual characteristics you need to watch for: Sexually mature males will have nuptial pads, these are blackened, rough patches on the inside of their fingers (like gloves). On albinos, these pads are quite obvious. Females will have a swollen cloaca (vent). Both males and females of this species will call. The picture is one of my albino males showing the nuptial pads.
