A few days ago my Cane Toad died and his tank mate, my smooth sided toad has not been acting like himself.
At times he will scratch at the tank wanting to get out.
other times I see him just sitting there burying his head in his front legs as if he is hiding from something.
He hardly opens his eyes but he is not sleeping.
He is rather skinny and I'm not sure if he is eating.
What should I do?
Specs:
He lives in a 20 gallon tank
substrate is jungle mix
he has two water dishes
and two places to hide
There is a heating pad on the bottom half of his tank.
Sounds like you should take him to a vet...
What did your cane toad die of? They could both be sick.
My Can toad had a prolasped rectum but after a sugar bath in warm water he got better, but slowly his health declined
Allright. I'm sorry to hear that.
I'd still suggest you go to a vet with your smooth sided toad - he might be affected by the departure of your cane toad, but it sounds like he's trying to escape a form of discomfort, by hiding his face and trying to get out. The hiding his face between his front legs isn't normal toad behaviour to my knowledge and his restlesness also seems to suggest discomfort to me.
Anyhow, you'd be better off safe than sorry. I'd say visit the vet![]()
Does he miss his friend? Should I get him a new tank mate?
He might miss his friend, but I doubt this is why he is behaving in such a way; Toad are not mammals - they don't express emotions of sadness or longing in the same way a dog might do it be "hiding it's face in it's paws".
He could be really sick. Take him to the vet first or you could risk getting his new tank mate sick, before you're sure there's nothing going on there.
