    Default It was unexpected.... Hi!

Hello, my name is Cody, I'm 20, located in Southern California and I didn't see it coming.

A year ago I was sitting in my chair, messing about on my computer when out of nowhere I see a ball of fur jump on the floor next to me. At first all I could think of was "SPIDER?! DON'T BE A SPIDER." yes, I have a fear of spiders like many others, although strangely I'm not as scared of most tarantulas. Anyways I went in for a closer inspection and to my delight and also confusion I found a little frog covered in my dogs/cats hair. So here I am today.

I still don't really know where it came from, the closest pond is across the street a few hundred feet away in the back of a animal shelter that gets heavy traffic and on that day in the summer it was roughly 100-105F outside. The pond is also home to a lot of turtles, ducks and I think there are some geese, it's really 2 ponds though, they have one upfront and another behind a bunch of trees. It is possible it came from our pool that we drained a while ago, I know it had some water in it still back then from rain. If it did come from our pool, my god did the frog get lucky we have stray cats all over the place, I'd be surprised if none of them killed it before it somehow got in. Not to mention our own dogs/cats, it boggles my mind.

I'm not really a frog person, I've always been into reptiles rather than amphibians, what I mean is I'm fascinated by all of them I just never thought I'd own a frog, although the thought of owning a fire-bellied toad has crossed my mind. I currently have 1 male Bearded Dragon, Thor (Almost 4 years old), 1 male Crested Gecko, Osiris (Roughly 3 years old), 1 female Leopard Gecko, Pebbles (6 years old). I also had a Fire Skink for 2 years named Ra, he was WC, age was unknown, but when I got him he was full grown, unfortunately one day I found him dead a year back in a one of the holes he had dug. I really liked him and Fire Skinks in general they are very beautiful, if I ever get one again it will be CB or nothing. Oh and my very first Leopard Gecko, a male, I had named Bam Bam, I ended up selling him to a local breeder in order to buy my Crested Gecko. That about sums it up on that, I will say though my dream is to one day be capable of owning either an Australian Water Dragon or an Argentine Black & White Tegu.

Hmm, might as well kill two birds with one stone, I could use some help identifying the exact type of frog I have. (If you would like me to put the following in a specific sub-forum do let me know, I have no problem doing so.)

I'll post a few pics I took today after setting him up in his new tank. If you have any idea what this little guy is, I'd appreciate it, I'd love to get some exact care info. I'd also like to figure out the sex so I can properly give it a name.

I think it may be a Baja California Tree Frog. If you want some larger pics and to see what the tank is setup like I made a gallery here: A Tree Frog, that stumbled upon me. Now a prisoner. :> - Imgur (I had a little fun with the description of the photos.)

Any insight is welcome, especially I need to change anything with the habitat.

Hello and welcome to FF Cody! From the markings, can narrow it down from other local tree frogs, to Pseudacris hypochondriaca, the Baja California Tree Frog .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

    Thanks for the welcomes!

I had a little help with my guess I used Califoniaherps photo index to try and narrow down what it could be, but there are a few frogs that looked similar, which makes sense since they are all split from the Pacific Tree Frog. With all this said, my current tank setup should be good for this little guy, I do have one questions though.

Is there any guide I can follow to determine the sex of my frog?

Most frogs, tree frogs included, usually share the common dimorphism traits; e.g. female is bigger, robust, darker color shades, little to almost no croaking sound while males are the opposite. Males tend to be brighter, noisier and smaller.

Thanks for the info! Perhaps I have a male then, I have heard croaking but not a crazy amount and it does have a dark patch under its mouth.
