Hi From Australia

Hello to everybody, I just thought I would introduce myself. My name is Ben and I am from Australia, I would like to say thank you in advance for everyone that contributes, i have already learnt a lot just by going through posts and reading, it has been great.

The one thing that i didn't understand at the beginning was not to house mix species together ( which is a big one ). I don't currently own any frogs yet but i am in the middle of constructing their new homes ( i think i have bitten off more than i can chew to be honest ). I hope people don't get sick of me asking too many questions to begin with, and hopefully in the near future i can pass on some tips and tricks to new members that are where i am at now.

Hello and welcome to FF ! Due to different frogs requiring different environments and the fact that many produce toxic substances in their skin that contaminate their water and substrate, frogs are best when kept among their own.

In the wild, animals can get away from each other to avoid stressing each other out with their presence. In the typical home enclosure that is impossible and over time, the stress affects the frogs immune system, leading to disease. There are instances of lucky individuals keeping Toads species or Tree Frogs mixed; but there are uncommon and many of us do not recommend it.

Hi Mentat,

Here in Australia most of our frogs are just Green Tree Frogs, when i first started looking into keeping frogs my original thought was " A tree frog, well, is a tree frog " until i started reading further into it, and then when i read what you just suggested made a lot of sense to me. We do have a few different species of frogs here, but nothing like other countries have. But regardless i have four different enclosures to kit out to house four different types of frogs ( Just have to get X-mas out the way first ).

That's what makes forums like this so valuable, i was about to make the number one mistake straight off the mark before i even got started. i just hope they will all be happy in their new homes once they are done.

Ben, I want to say “thank you” for doing your research before you have the frogs in hand. This saves you a lot of heartache, time and not to mention money. I see so many posts where people get frogs and the poor creatures end up extremely sick and dyeing because of lack of research. The majority of the people on this forum are amazingly helpful & the moderators are loaded with info. I can't wait to see the enclosures you're building for your new froggy friends. Here on FF we LOVE pictures!!

And FYI........there is no such thing as "just" a frog, they are all beautiful creatures in their own way.

Hello and welcome to the forum, as above great to see somebody who has done research! Once you get into keeping frogs here in Australia you won't be able to stop! We may not have the worlds species to keep but there are many Strange and wonderful frogs & toads to look after Good luck and enjoy.

Thank you both Gail and Jared. I am really looking forward to getting into it. I spent some time in the north of Australia where it was quite tropical and we use to have GTF's all over the place, in the toilet, in the shower, and i use to love listening to the croaking at night. I am not there any more but i am hoping it will be the same.
