Are isopods ok in a FBT tank? are their shells too hard in case a FBT eats one?

ive got a 10 gallon tank with 2 fbts.... 50/50 land water.

I have an otocinlus and corey catfish in there as well, live plants and moss.

Looking to keep the tank as maintenance free as possible... would like to introduce isopods to help clean waste / mold (no mold yet, that i can see!) and to help w/ nutrients for the plants.

    Hello,
An enclosure with soil, plants, decaying plant matter, moss, fungus, molds and poop is a good place for isopods and spring tails.
If you ave plants ; you may see them eventually - anyway
If the FBs eat them (they are really too small a feeder for them) --- it will not hurt them.

Isopods are what you call "Rolly Pollies" right? The little black things that roll up in a ball ?

Correct. Otherwise known as pill bugs, or wood lice. They are relatively simple to culture. Some coco fiber, some crushed up leaf litter and some cardboard and they will continue breed for you for quite some time.

Hi, there are only a couple species of isopods that actually roll up into a ball. But yes "rolly pollies" are an isopod.

Very true, my giant oranges play dead versus rolling up in a ball.

If i wanted to take it slow instead of introducing both, which would u recommend introducing first? springtails or 'rolly polies' ? and are they available at petsmart or any similar place?

Springtails. They breed so much quicker. I have never seen them in a pet store. Most online reptile and feeder retailers carry a wide selection.

Buy them both from bugs in cyberspace. They are cheap and easy to keep. You can introduce them together but the pill bugs populate more slowly than the springtails.

If you are ever in the Philly area, I'd be more than happy to give you some. I just set up a new culture, so I would need a few weeks.

Im not so sure about catching springtails, but are there any opinions on finding some rolly pollies in my backyard? We dont use any fertilizer or anything like that, if anything lawn is over run with weeds. Then again maybe i wouldnt be able to find any this time of year in NY state

If you could find some, they "should" be safe. I would culture a few generations of them before adding them to the enclosure.

Try it out. I doubt Rolly Pollies from your backyard would do any harmful damage . They most likely are like the ones you would buy.
