what plant light is good? i am building a live terrarium for my red eyes when i get them. i was told a 6500K fluorescent bulb is recommended? and can i use a reptisun 2.0 instead or? i dont know, need a little help please

A light source close to 6,500K will work. A compact fluorescent is a good bet. LED fixtures are coming down in price and some models are affordable. Their advantage is little heat production and long life. Bill bought LEDs for his last set-up. Good luck !

incandescents are good for heat only. they cannot provide the proper spectrum for live plants. cfl's, florescent tubes, or led's all have the proper spectrums available. as far as the reptisun, i would get daylight bulbs from home dept or walmart before i overspent on those.

of course, if you want to combine heat and lighting in one, you could go with metal halide reef lighting. but then you need to mount the light about 4 feet above the tank and it may still be too hot and your electric meter will go insane!! LOL

they were considered good back in the day, but realistically, because of the design of an incandescent bulb, they can only coat the outside of the bulb to give any kind of spectrum at all. problem is that the coating burns off rather quickly, as anyone who has ever had an incandescent blacklight that was used on a regular basis would remember
florescents and cfl's on the other hand, use all kinds of good stuff inside the tube that gets excited with all that energy flowing though there and because a much more stable spectrum. at least for a year or 2. i change bulbs every 18 months, whether they are burnt out or not.
