    Default do frogs HYBERNATE

Im worried about my frog, Kairu. He usually calls every night and eats like a happy boy. But about a week ago he stopped croaking and he seems to be eating less.

When I stopped by the reptile store the guy said frogs hibernate? can anyone confirm this info? My boy used to eat about 20 extra small crickets 3x a week. The store ran out of the xsmall so Ive been feeding small which are quite larger so maybe he is full? But that doesnt explain the lack of croaking.

Im worried, any help would be greatly appreciated as Ive sent multiple personal messages with no responses.

    thank you

Hi CA COQUI. Frogs from northern hemisphere will hibernate but most often go
through a period of cool climate where they are less active and eat less, i wouldn't
worry. As long as he's still eating.

thanks Ryan. Do you know what the temp in his terrarium should be? Im using the exoterra 3 lamp with a single red bulb and two regular lights with uv.

I added an additional halogen mini dome with a 25w bulb which i run during the day, but the tank is still 69'. should i bump up the bulb wattage? seemed liek the 50w bulb pit out a lot of heat but i was worried of burning my plants and harming my frog.

    my tank is 36"tx24"wx18"d

    thanks for your help

Some frogs go into hibernation in order to survive Winter. Most any frog will slow it's activity in response to cooler shorter days. Problem is when it gets colder than frog can manage in the enclosure for extended periods. Such low temps can damage the frogs kidney's and lymph hearts. To determine the day/night temperature range for your frog, need to know it's species. To ID will need a few pics of frog from top and side and it's length from snout to vent (SVL). Also, if a Coqui, a call recording would help too.

You can use a higher wattage bulb as long as it does not exceed the fixture maximum wattage. Also, will need either a manual controller (rheostat) or an automatic thermostat to dial in the correct temperature. Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Heatheranne, I also tried to send a personal message to the author of the care sheet, which was met with no response.

Heather has you covered CA COQUI Coquis come from puerto rico where its hot and humid. Ive always wnated to care fro the species but my government (BC) banned these guys. They lay their eggs on land and have an amazing appetite for a frog.

Reason asked for species is that there is more than one in P.R.; were the invasive HI frog originated. A Coqui from HI, is Eleutherodactylus coqui or as known in P.R., the Common Coqui. Maybe you want to bring the enclosure temperature to 75F during the day (watch the humidity does not drop) and see if that perks him up.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Thanks Carlos. What do you think about having a heating pad attached to the outside of the terrarium? I purchased a pad, but the directions say dont use it if the tank has water in it. The manufacturer warns against this because of hairline cracks in the glass, even if you put it above the water line. However, the sales person assured me this was just a disclaimer and that cracks don't occur?

    thanks for everyones help.
