    Default "Puffed" Throat?

Hello all, beginner back with some more questions. I've had my three Darts for three months or so now, and they've been doing well -- active, eating, etc. Finally got the fruit fly culturing under control, and just starting my first real vivarium build to improve on their habitat!

I have a question about one of my frogs, though. Hopefully someone can help --- it's a blue/black Auratus, I think. The past two days its throat is swollen or puffed up - all the time. Not inflating/deflating - it is constant. The frog is acting normal, eating and moving, but I'm not sure what the throat means. Google led to too many ideas to be of much help. Does this mean it is a male? Is it normal, or a cause for concern? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    Poor baby .
Please post a photo , if possible.

It's possible this is an infection. Be mindful that a herp vet may be needed?
A specialist for this is necessary....as you can understand the doses of medications are small and need proper instruction.

Is he in the water a lot?

What was used to create the enclosure they are in ? ( foams, metal, glue or adhesives, silicone, plastic)
Are there any fake plants? List every thing if you can.

You might email Dr Frye ??? It can't hurt ; for the use of an antibiotic called Baytril ??
It's best to keep the things on hand -anyway .......so treatment is ready to go without having to wait for shipping.

He will get back to you right away--- You will need to include a photo in you email to him.

    I'll check back later today

    Thanks for the response, Lynn!

He seems to be doing a little better. His throat swelling went away yesterday, but he is pretty lethargic, not eating. Yes, hanging out in the water. I was up about six times last night with my infant, and each time I peeked at him he was in a different place --- looked like he'd stay in the water for a bit, climb out and under some leaf litter, and then he'd be back in the water again the next time I got up.

Still alive this morning, so after my midnight googling, went out early and found the ingredients for amphibian ringer's solution. Gave him a good soak for an hour this morning, and it seems to have helped a bit -- he seems much more alert.

I did notice two things: a teeeeeeny bug running across him when I placed him in the solution (a mite?), and what almost looks like flaky skin on his belly. I only noticed the skin as it turned whiteish. No open sores or anything, no abrasions or visible injury -- maybe skin getting ready to shed? Any advice would be much appreciated. Off to google this!

He's in a glass/latex/screen tank, with moss and coconut substrate, mopani wood, one fake plant, three real plants that have provided some natural leaf litter.
He's been the most active and sociable of the frogs...so sad to seem him ill.

I'll try to get a picture when I soak him again, and will keep you updated.
