Depends on the feeder. Some crawly bugs you can leave in the right dish, but worms I put on a plastic plate and watch. If you have more then one toad, good to make sure everyone gets fed, particularly if one is a more aggressive eater. I feed wax worms from tongs. I try to keep the substrate ingestion to a minimum, but it happens anyway.
taking them out to feed usually stresses too much. If they decline food in tank, just try again later.
