So, here's my situation: my lovely toad Yael loves adult crickets, but she also likes to eat many smaller crickets if adults aren't available. I live in a small apartment and am not able to house a gigantic amount of crickets, having just 60 or so makes them chirp like crazy. I shudder to think what this place would sound like with 500+!
I've been feeding her Vita-bug Crickets To Go dusted with Repashy Calcium Plus dust but would like to start gutloading crickets at home for a wider nutrition spectrum. I can only gutload small amounts at a time though in light of the above.
I've heard mixed reviews about cricket diets like Fluker's and cricket cubes, and some recipes sound really complex and time-consuming and/or meant for enormous amounts of crickets.
So...I was thinking banana/squash/kale dry baby food (shown here), 1 packet mixed with a 1 teaspoon Herptivite, would work. That about 2 tablespoons or so would be sufficient to gutload 30-40 adult crickets at a time so long as I put some cricket water pellets in, and they would still get dusted with Repashy immediately before becoming toad chow.
Feedback would be appreciated (as would any tips for handling crickets in small living spaces!)
Hello and welcome to FF! I keep crickets in a ExoTerra Medium Beeder Box with a piece of egg carton covering around 1/3-1/2 of space. Crickets are fed veggie fish flakes with spirulina, lettuce, carrots, and oats. For toads would add Night Crawlers to diet (available not-dyed at Walmarts Sports section and bait shops).
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
