Woke up this morning and was misting my frogs when I noticed this on the side of one of their mouths.
What is this?? Should I treat it or let it heal on its own? She does not seem to be in any pain and is as active as usual.
Only recent changes to the tank are replacing coco fiber substrate with water.
Every feeding is dusted with repashy calcium plus. Other side of her mouth is totally normal, and none of the other frogs are displaying anything similar.

Just remembered that when feeding last night, I saw one of them try to eat the end of a manzanita branch that is in the tank.
Could that have caused this? And does it need to be treated? How?
If frog is eating and you can monitor in present enclosure, maybe can observe there. If not, would move to hospital type enclosure where close monitoring is possible.
If it get's increasingly worse during today, might need antibiotics. Do you have a topical anti-bacterial based on silver or maybe Baytril on hand? You might need it in the next couple of days. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
I'll watch it closely.
I don't have any silver based topical ointment on hand, but I do have original neosporin.
I can stop at the drug store on my way home from work. Would this suffice?
It's not what you'd get from a vet or doctor, but it's still silver based. Is this frog safe?
I picked up the above mentioned silver gel at the store. Does anyone know if this is safe?
I have treated her lip with normal strength Neosporin, but I'd really like to use this if it would be more helpful.
So far the swelling hasn't gotten any worse, but it hasn't gotten any better either. She's still plenty alert and hoppy so I'm not too worried. Just want to nip this in the bud.
What kind of frog is that? It's a cracking looking frog

Ah okayhaha. Well thanks, nok1888.
Anyone know how many times a day I should apply the neosporin?
Cupric chloride appears an active ingredient and I have no idea if it's safe for frogs. Copper has been shown to affect development, growth, survival, and behavior in larval northern leopard frogs. Although it's used as an anti-ectoparasite fish medication; it is chronically deadly against invertebrates and scaleless fish like eels. Hopefully Lija and Heather will see this and post their recommendation. You can also contact Dr. Frye (email frog pics) and get Baytril or other dermal antibiotics from him. Good luck!

Thank you Carlos. I've emailed dr frye and will post his response for anyone searching for similar info in the future. She has been moved to a quarantine tank for now.
I got this reply from Dr. Frye.
"I wouldn't, but I am not truly a chemist."
Would a melafix soak be of any benefit?
And how many times a day can neosporin be applied?
Thought you had emailed Dr. Frye with info about frog's condition and photo showing swollen lip. Did he prescribed Baytril or any medication?
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
I did email him about that, when I started this thread.
This is our email conversation in its entirety. I cannot afford Baytril or anything else right now. Once I get my next paycheck, if she is still having issues, I will buy some from him.
Read from bottom to top.

Thank you Dr. Frye.
I believe that it was caused by her biting onto a branch in the tank.
I've been applying regular neosporin but it doesn't seem to be having any effect yet.
I picked up "Anti-Microbial Silver Gel" from the local drug store.
Active ingredient is Silver Chloride.
All ingredients are: water, glycerine, polyacrylate polymer, cellulose gum, silver chloride, sodium chloride, cupric chloride.
Would this be safe to apply to the wound?
Thank you
Emily

Emily,
I do not know what caused this or if
it will get better on its own. It doesn't look too
serious, and may very well heal on its own. If it
continues to worsen or get larger or change colors, I would
definitely recommend treating the frog with Baytril and
Silversulfadiazene.
As a first aid kit, I
strongly recommend having a few drugs on hand
at all times. That way when a
medical
problem arises, you just need to contact me, and I can steer
you down the right
path.
Metronidizole is
an antibacterial, antiprotozoal, and APPETITE STIMULANT. It
is $30 per 100 mLs.
Silversulfadiazene
is a topical antibiotic and antifungal that promotes healing
while discouraging
scarring. It should be used on ALL
skin
lesions and costs $34 per ounce.
Baytril is a
strong systemic antibiotic that needs to be mixed carefully.
It costs $24 per ounce and is
mixed according
to the size of the frog treated.
Only a
few drops are used daily.
Panacur is a
powdered dewormer. It is very safe
and
easy to use and costs $16 per spoonful.
Shipping costs $11.40
for Priority on any order that includes one of the liquid
medications. If you purchase Panacur
alone, shipping costs
$2. I can not ship medications
outside
of the United States.
You can pay by
PayPal at dr.frye.vetatmilan@gmail.com
, or by calling my office at 734-439-2273 and paying via
credit card over the
phone.

I'm a member of frogforum.net and was
wondering if you could help me out with an issue with one of
my milk frogs.
I was misting the tank this morning and noticed an odd
swelling on the side of one of the frogs mouths.
Was wondering if this should be treated or will heal on its
own and what could have possibly caused it.
She is as active as usual and does not look like she is in
pain, and is not displaying any strange behaviors that
I've seen yet.
All food is dusted with Repashy calcium plus, and none of
the other frogs are displaying anything similar.
Only recent changes to the tank have been switching from
coco fiber substrate to water.
Attached are pictures of the swollen mouth.
Thank you

Good news everyone!!
The swelling has gone down considerably! Still there but making progress
Hopefully by the end of the week, she will be back home with her tank-mates.
Sorry. dunno why the Cowboy Bebop thing attached. I dont know how to remove it.
Good to know frog is doing better Emily!
