Hello FF
i have my tomato frog (Bob) tank and i've had close to no luck with some plants, the only
one surviving is a philodenderon plant. I use to have a pothos plant but the roots rotted
and quickly died, i have a 40 watt bulb on a 15 gallon long tank and i think this may be the
problem now.

Hi Ryan,
Could you possibly post a current photo of the tank?
Please describe the substrate layers in detail. (soil and type of drainage construction etc)
Lynn.

For this setup i do not have a drainage layer (experimenting) and
i tried putting the plants directly in with the cocoanut fiber. Ive never
really had any luck with Pothos whether it has a drainage layer or not
and its ironic that my tomato frog doesn't rustle them up.

That is odd, my Pothos grows like crazy. I have to trim every couple months. What kind of bulb are you using? I have a Repi Glow 2.0, if that helps. Also, can you post a picture this could help find a solution.
i use to have an exo terra 50 watt bulb but that was a bit over the top so i use a regular 40 watt bulb in a 15 gallon tank.

40 watts should be enough. I think I'm using only 18 watts, but its is a T8 style bulb. Also, What spectrum are they, because anything under 5500k will not work well. 6500k is ideal though.
Ironic, I have great success in all my tanks but my Tomato Frog Enclosure also, I tried everything.....I replaced them all with fake plants.
are you sure it's a pothos? i grow them in water. heck i have even grown them aquatically until they broke the surface, and have never seen pothos roots rot. not to mention they grow roots every couple inches or so to grab whatever they are climbing or trailing on and also use them to absorb nutrients. it's almost unheard of to have a pothos rot. what kind of philodendron is it? vining? or full terrestrial?
a 40w bulb is fine as long as the color temp is in the correct range.

Yes the plant is Golden pothos that i had gotten from walmart. I rinsed the plant well and rinsed the roots of any
dirt then repotted it within the enclosure. The philodenderon is terrestrial and it looks similar to the one below.

Sorry. but that is not Golden Pothos. If it is PATHOS take that out indifferently, like now (DEADLY). Major companies false advertise even Petsmart/Petco. Now two people have claimed the same problem, which we have to take into consideration. Tomato Frogs could emit some substance that the plant does not like or harmful to the plant.
i meant that the philodenderon looks lke the plant pictured but thanks for the advice, ill look for different plants right away and ive already taken the pathos out if that is what it is

Try a peace lily. They survive in damn near any condition in my experience and their growth pattern is much more attractive than a pothos.
Pothos rotting is a strange thing, they'll grow in water as Bill has mentioned, and they'll grow just fine out of soil if it's humid enough.
What's a Pathos plant? The full Latin name please? Google is only turning up people misspelling Pothos, Epipremnum aureum. Or is that what you meant and if so why are you calling it deadly? (yes, pothos has calcium oxalate and shouldn't be eaten but it's pretty low on the toxicity scale and I've never seen anyone ever have a problem with frogs)
I could be wrong, I have never had any problems with my Golden Pothos and my pacman, but i do tong feed. Heart leaf philodendron, i heard mix reviews about this plant, but it is on the safe this plant list.
