Hi,
I also keep Chinese Firebellied NewtsGentle and beautiful pets indeed, but personally, I would prefer ADFs. They´re pretty active if kept well, whereas the newts pretty much do nothing most of the time. They are really cute and do react to me, though; but they need many hours each day to rest. Plus, their lifetime shortens dramatically if you can´t provide cool temperatures: about 54-61°F in winter and 64-72°F in summer. Simulating seasons helps a lot to keep them healthy, including a shortened light period of about 8 hours in winter and a prolongued "day" of 14-16 hours in summer. Temperatures above 75°F quickly become dangerous and need to be avoided. Although most adult individuals can be kept mostly aquatic, some avoid to go into the water. Such animals need a sufficiently large land area and only feed on small terrestrial live food.
ADFs prefer more or less constant temperatures between 74 and 79°F and are very lively if kept in a decent-sized group in a densely planted species-only tank.
