Below are pics of my wtf, one of them is thin & active. The one in the pic isn't jumping at all, he tried once and his legs went all weird and un-coordinated. He's really lethargic and didn't come out his tree stump last night. Today he did and he looks all bloated. He feels "squishy" not that I've squeezed him but looks full of air and his abdo keeps like moving. Is impaction? Or something else? Advice?
Also he looks quite pink on his legs and belly
So I saw this somewhere else on the forum so here goes,The following information will be very helpful if provided when requesting assistance with either your frog or enclosure. To help with your questions, please utilize the below list and post the information in the proper forum area to get advice from FF members that keep the same frog. This will allow for little confusion and a faster more informed response.
1. Size of enclosure: Only small at the moment, 45X20X25cm, got a 45X45X65 exo terro one coming
2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size differences: 2 same batch from reptile shop, this one is only slightly larger.
3. Humidity: 90+%
4. Temperature: Between 70.0 - 75
5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish: both from tap.
6. Materials used for substrate: Coconut fibre, recently changed from shpagunm moss & some mud brick (I was advised either of these suitable)
7. Enclosure set up i.e. plants (live or artificial), wood, bark and other materials. All artificial plants, hallow cork bark, artificial vine & stone against side and bowl
- How were things prepared prior to being put into the viv.: Cleaned in hot soapy water and rinsed
8. Main food source: Crickets, daily at them moment.
9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often): Every other day, tree frog power!?
10. Lighting: Nil atm, advised wasn't required and they sleep in the lighting fixture, until I get the new viv.
11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure external fan heater and heat mat
12. When is the last time he/she ate - Tried tonight, unsure if he got one.
13. Have you found poop lately - I have but don't know if its his
14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)See above
15. How old is the frog- 3/4months
16. How long have you owned him/her: 1month
17. Is the frog wild caught or captive bred: Captive
18. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats: None yet, was only just recently thinking about it
19. How often the frog is handled: Not overly often, although probably too often for ideal
20. Is the enclosure kept in a high or low traffic area- In bedroom, so probably high!?
21. Describe enclosure maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc) - Spot cleaned & water changed daily during feeding, full clean has been done twice since we bought them, so every two weeks.
He sat in a honey bath now and has perked up a bit but still hasn't pooed or appeared to want to eat. He has turned green now, but still not 100%/. He appears pink on his belly and legs.
Hello and welcome to FF Dalmond! Appreciate answering the questions because already saw various problem areas. Your frog is suffering from Toxic Out Syndrome (TOS) and will get worse if these issues are not corrected ASAP. Before anything, please read this article on their proper care: Frog Forum - White's Tree Frog Care - Litoria caerulea .
You need to get a dechlorinator and use it with all tap water. Seachem Prime or ExoTerra Aquatize are very good at making water safe. Once you correct this; get some unflavored Pedialyte (baby electrolyte formula) and make a 90% 80F treated water & 10% Pedialyte solution. Give frogs a 20 minute bath daily (solution to their chin) for a couple days to help them detoxify. Do keep us informed of their health daily.
Your temperature is too low; Whites need 85F daytime with a 10F degree drop at night. Humidity is too high which indicates low ventilation. Tree frogs need well ventilated air and will do fine with lower humidity levels around 65%. I have no idea what "mud brick" is; but shredded coco is OK for substrate if it was mixed with dechlorinated water. If not; replace it now with correct mix.
Soapy water for cleaning is a no-no for frogs! If traces of soap remain after rinse they can make frog sick or worse. You can clean enclosure and non-porous decor with ZooMed's Wipe Out or bleach. Let us know which one you prefer and will explain procedure later. Also, you need to move frogs to a larger and taller enclosure; but you already know that.
To better monitor frog is eating can get a small 2 in. high glass bowl and place crickets in it. Once frogs figure out to get them from top, it will be easier to monitor frogs feeding. Crickets should be gut loaded 24-48 hours before feeding with oatmeal, fish flakes, carrots, lettuce, etc. Dust with CA/D3 2X and vitamins 1X weekly on different days with skip day in between. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
So bit of an update, sorry for not replying.... Had no Internet.
Gonzo became more ill. He had a couple more episodes of bloating which came down with a honey bath but hewas very lethargic and not eating quite right. I decided to take him to the vet as he seemed to be spending alot of time in the water despite a good humidity. She agreed with my thoughts of an infection (I work in human healthcare so I took a guess and applied the same principles) and prescribed bay trial which I gave daily for 5 days on the fifth day he became suddenly much worse and had a seizure like episode where his legs stuck out and his abdomen pulsated he then looked dead, no breathing a stiff and I thought I had lost hime but he started breathing again and another long soak improved his condition during which he passed a poo with some of the substrate in. I took him that evening to the vet who had a phone consultation with a specialist and on their advice was give a sub-cut calcium injection and some fluids. I was to return him today for an X-ray. Over night he improved dramatically to the point I nearly canceled the X-ray but I had it done just incase. The vet showed me the X-ray (very cool to see!) and explained that there was nothing concerning, there was some gas present in his intestines which is concurrent with a bowel irritation. Her advice was to change the substrate from the orchid bark back to the humus brick we had before, to continue the full course of baytril and a daily honey bath.
Gonzo is now back to his lively self and looking very well, we're still unsure if it was impaction of sorts or a calcium deficiency (as I've read that that can present with seizure like episodes)
Also we saw him shedding his skin earlier and I've got it on video if you'd like to see I post a reply with the link shortly, it's just uploading
Heres the link: Whites Tree Frog Shedding - YouTube
I'm glad Gonzo got better and made it through. It's good you have a competent veterinary that took interest and found a proper treatment. Never heard of "Tree Frog Power" supplements and a search in net turned out negative. Since it appears your frog got sick from a CA imbalance, my response would be to discard whatever you where using and get some RepCal or Repashy's Calcium and vitamin products and use that. Good luck
!
