Hi! I'm new here and new to the world of pacmans.
I got my first pacman, a green cranwelli, a few weeks ago and he is roughly 3in SVL. I'm not sure if he is a he or not. His name is Greedy Gut
I just got my second pacman Sunday, a cute adorable 1in SVL albino also unsure of sex. His name is Lemondrop.
GreedyGut is a mad man for nightcrawlers but I'm very worried about him eating substrate, I use Jungle Mix. I was told I could feed him in a seperate enclosure but this seems really stressful to move him every single day. He eats two full grown nightcrawlers daily, a pinkie once a month (sometimes twice a month if it's super tiny) and he had his first try of crickets the other night. I do tong feed but if I don't leave the nightcrawlers long enough he eats the tongs and when I leave them long enough, the worms drop in to the ground and become caked in dirt which he eats.
And Lemondrop is so tiny that I can't actually hold the worms with tongs and have him grab the worm without grabbing the tongs so I'm worried he's getting more dirt than he should to and especially with him SO small I am worried.
What's the best way to feed these guys without them getting mouthfuls of dirt?
I just wanted to add that I am NOT housing these two together!
Lemondrop is in a small kitter keeper and GreedyGut is in a large rubbermaid that is a bit bigger than a 10gallon tank.
I never used jungle earth, if I remember correctly it is coconut fibre, husk and moss mix.
Anyway change what you're using to exo earth or plantation soil, these are very fine coconut fibre and if swallowed it it ok.
Different people are doing different things, some feed in a separate enclosure, some not, as long as frog is eating it is all it matters.
I don't feed in a separate, because:
- for some frogs it is very stressful
- very time consuming, nightmare if to have a big collections, separate tubs for everybody to feed, disinfect after each frog...oh my....
I feed only in the enclosures!
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
Hello and welcome to FF Amber! Also feed frogs in their enclosure and never had a problem resulting from ingesting shredded coco with their meal. Recommend change substrate to either brand of shredded coco Lija mentioned and mix with dechlorinated water until slightly damp and clumps in fist without dripping water out. If it worries you, can place night crawlers in a flat small glass dish or similar that fits in their enclosure and see if your frogs will eat from it. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Have to agree with the two smart people above me, if your using the right substrate, don't worry. My smallest one is really agressive and always attacks my tongs and ingests some eco-earth. He poops regularly and has no issues passing it at all.
When i got my first pac I fed in a separate tub and and she would eat quite a bit but it would take forever to get her to take it and an equally long time to clean up afterwards. After I switched to feeding in the enclosure she snatches up food as soon as it crosses her path and it only takes all of 5 mins now, sometimes even less

No need to use a seperate container for feeding. Just switch to Eco Earth Coconut Fiber(not husk) or Exo Terra Plantation soil and all should be fine.
If you rinse the worms off with dechlorinated water and dab them dry with a paper towel less of the substrate will adhere to the worms.
Alright I will be switching out substrate! For today, I tried feeding GreedyGut on a plate... He bit the edge of the plate then gave me a dirty look. Lemondrop didn't care for any worms today which I'm not too surprised being that he's settling in and he hasn't had worms before. He did eat two crickets yesterday though.
I was feeding in a separate enclosure for a while. It has its pros and cons. I've noticed that it made my lazy frog even more lazy. Now I'm back to feeding in the enclosure and Mojo is back to his old self.
Just a small update, switched to eco earth today.![]()
