Leopard Frog Care

I just recently caught 2 leopard frog tadpoles from a creek near my house, one is now a air-breathing little froggy, and the other one is still a tadpole, but has 2 back legs. I was looking for some good informational websites or info from anyone who has had these guys. I have the frog in a 10 gallon with about 6 inches of water in the water side, and the tad is still in my 10 gallon fish aquarium.

These guys will need a larger enclosure then a 10 gallon. They get large and can jump extremely far.

Like most other Rana species, they don't make good pets - they are nervous and tend to damage their nose by jumping into things all the time. I'd let them go if I were you and get a better frog as a pet, such as a Gray Tree Frog. Right now in Texas they should be at the tail end of breeding or at least still calling. If you live at or east of I-35, drive around and listen for them at night. There's a recording on the Gray Tree Frog care article recorded in east TX of Hyla versicolor. Hyla chrysoscelis sounds like a higher pitched version of Hyla versicolor. If you live near Houston or south east TX, you could also look for Squirrel Tree Frogs, and in East Texas there are Green Tree Frogs. My favourites are the Grays though, because they get so tame.

This is great advice John. I had a pair of these a long time ago because I think they look really cool They were always on edge and destroyed the enclosure everyday by jumping all over everything, they are very strong too. This is one species best enjoyed from a distance.

I had two for the majority of last summer. They were not jumpy at all, they were actually really mellow. I fed them wild caught grasshoppers and other bugs and they would kinda be on edge at feeding time but were otherwise totally calm.

I wish I could get calm ones. They are so pretty.
