after looking around a bit it probably is a breed of tree frog, but just seeing if you can tell specifically what it is
hey guys, so i was cutting my grass and almost ran this little guy over, figured i'd see if you guys can ID him and let me know if this is a breed that can be kept as a pet.

Hello and welcome to FF! Not a tree frog; looks like a juvenile Rana clamitans, commonly known as a Green Frog. Can be kept as pet, but check with your state's fish and wildlife webpage to ensure it's legal to capture.
Can set-up a tank for it following this care sheet for Leopard frog (similar requirements): Frog Forum - Leopard Frog Care - Rana pipiens (Schreber, 1782) and R. sphenocephala (1886) . Also, here is some information on their natural habitats: AmphibiaWeb - Rana clamitans . Let us know if keeping it and good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
thanks so much for the info, i will look into that and let you know
so i did the research, and found that there seems to be no restrictions, so we went out to the pet store to buy a new home and supplies. while there i made the decision that we are just rushing into this way too fast and need to take our time and do this right. we are going out of town this weekend, and just dont have the time to do a proper set up. i released him back in the yard where i found him.
BUT now that i have spent some time on here i definitely have the bug now and will be setting up something at a later day. whats is the best beginner frog that has some good color? i imagine dart frogs are more difficult to care for.
Darts are not harder to keep than other frogs as long as you provide their needs. Also, there are hardier species than others. This article might help you make up your mind about which frog to keep: Frog Forum - Choosing a Frog .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
He could also be a young Leopard Frog. Leopard frogs do not have spots and the dorsal lines until they are older and by his size he looks young. If he is a Leopard frog his spots and stripes will come in later on. I know you released him back to the yard, but it might be helpful to some one else that runs across this thread at a later date.
