He could also be a young Leopard Frog. Leopard frogs do not have spots and the dorsal lines until they are older and by his size he looks young. If he is a Leopard frog his spots and stripes will come in later on. I know you released him back to the yard, but it might be helpful to some one else that runs across this thread at a later date.
