Hi everyone, I apologize, I haven't posted in a long time, I have been battling an illness, I'm thinking about getting two Marine Toads. I have read about them as I do before any Frog/Toad I have acquired. Will both be happy together in a 90 long enclosure? Anything special I need to know about them?
They would be happy together so long as they are close to the same size. You do need a large enclosure for them. If it is 90 inches long that would work great. they need about as much room as american bullfrogs. Be extra careful when handling around other pets. as you may already know cane toads can be very toxic. They do have a large appitite but unlike large bodied frogs species cane toads prefer smaller prey. My cane toads eat more then my pixie frog. but it wouldnt even attempt anything as large as a pixie would. A very diverse diet is important for this Toad.
oh when you said 90 long i figured you measured it in length not gallon. but none the less 90 gal is a good size.
A 90G should be OK; specially if 2 males. Agree with DA that frogs should be around same size to avoid one being eaten. BTW, 90G tanks (same base dimension as 75G, just higher) are all the same unless custom built.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
wow, I was looking for info on these cane toads as they are running all over the place. Not sure I want one as a pet but I would be glad to ship them anywhere to get of them.
what part of the US do you live? I wish i could find them in my back yard. Can you send some pics of some?
East Orlando, Florida
fish and wildlife told me to spray suntan lotion on their belly's which will cause them to pass out right away and then put them in the freezer. Apparently somebody tried to cut one in half and the toxic stuff got in his eye and blinded him for two days. Not sure I want to be known for the idiot who got messed up by a toad, ha a shark, alligator or something big but please toad don't take me down!!! haha
you want them get hold of me here: www.copoutfishing.com or www.copoutoutdooradventures.com
My female cane toad was really fast and ate more than my african bullfrog when they were the same size. Trust me you will be spending a fortune trying to fill it up each feeding if it's a girl.
Find it sad that uninformed, careless, or irresponsible humans introduce plants and animals into areas they are not naturally found at. Then when this creates an ecological disaster, the human answer is (in the case of Cane Toads) to spray them and freeze them. Wonder what we will do to ourselves when this planet's resources become scarce and can't support us all
.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Yes but the majority of the people in the world are too stupid to realise or just don't care. Imagine what the world would be like if humans weren't around, no pollution, no wars, no deforestation, no extinctions but all we can think is OMG THAT TOAD IS SLIGHTLY DISRUPTING A SMALL SCALE ECOSYSTEM, WE MUST NOW DESTROY IT EVEN THOUGH ITS OUR FAULT FOR INTRODUCING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
haha you know that no one will take fault its all the toads fault. this mentality makes me sick. people care more about their way of life much more then they care about any species of animal let alone a little toad. dont even get me started on ocean life. i am just happy to find a community that really does care. at least there is the slightest bit of hope out there.
My soon to be sister-in-law lives in Florida. She finds cane toads and Cuban tree frogs in and around her house all the time. I think with the Cubans that you are not allowed to release them back into the wild if you catch them. I don't know about with the cane toads. But we have been trying to find laws about both. Because if legal, she might bring us some when she comes to visit.
Anyone know if that is legal or where I can get the info?
if the temps in your area get below freezing at any time there should be no reason for any laws restricting them.
Oh I know it isn't illegal for me to own them. I'm wondering is it illegal for my sister-in-law to gather them in Florida and bring them across state lines.
you can export them from florida. in fact that is where i got one of mine from. the laws from state to state will only restrict entry not export. unless in the past year the laws have changed.
I'm pretty sure it's not illegal, there is an old thread on here where someone in FL was sending out free Cubans. I was looking around on a website a while back(don't remember where it was sorry) and it was saying that in FL Cubans and cane toads were to be euthanized on site or exported to a state that has temps drop below freezing for more than a month out of the year or something along those lines.
