Does anyone have knowledge on bringing frogs into Canada? I have been looking at prices in the states lately and it looks like if I bought the rest of the frogs that I want it could be cheaper... BTW I payed $80 for my pyxie.. pyxies are rare here and very expensive, I wasn't going to hope it would be cheaper next time and risk it being sold when that price that was typed and looked pretty permanent. I had the money so I took him home. But I have a few questions, Do people ship frogs into Canada for non pet stores? Is it even worth it to buy frogs in the states from Canada? because I know with a lot of snakes I want theyd have to be examined at the border then theres shipping... And my main question is what is the difference in a pet store with one pyxie in it for $80 buying there frogs and a normal person ordering frogs to Canada? Do they even buy them over the border? i want to buy a bunch of babies from somewhere but $80 isnt going to work when i want to buy multiple pyxies and possibly some other species. obviously they buy them somewhere....
In the U.S., one would have to get a permit to import certain animals. It would have to be approved by CITES. Here the application cost is 100 (I'm not sure if it has gone up.) Then there's freight charges. When you import, (obviously you know) they will not be traveling threw the mail, they have to be flown in. I also know they then will have to be inspected and passed by customs. The difference from you or a pet store importing would only be cost efficiency. The pet store will buy in large numbers and make a profit, while you would be buying in a small sum, and it would cost you quite a bit of money and of course time.
Keep in mind, this is importing to the U.S. and I have no clue how it works in CA, but i'm sure it's not terribly different. Also you are not talking about one species, each species would have to be approved. In my opinion unless you are purchasing a lot and planning on reselling for profit, it's not worth it.
If you live close to the border, then only thing to do is check Canada's laws to bring back frogs with you into Canada. First you would locate frogs you want and arrange with dealer to have them deliver frogs to FEDEX station nearest border. On delivery day morning you are already at delivery point and can pick your frogs. Again, make sure you know requirements to bring back with you and have done all paperwork your country asks to import them. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
this is what I read it says I don't need an import permit? Amphibians and reptiles (excluding turtles and tortoises) are not regulated under the Health of Animals Regulations (other than Part XII that regulates the transport of all animals). As a result, there is no Canadian Food Inspection Agency requirement to obtain an import permit, nor a health certificate. Under normal circumstances, there are no border inspections. Imports are permitted from any country, for any use, to any destination in Canada.
