Insects should be same size as distance between frog eyes and earthworms or their pieces same as frogs SVL. It's not only about fitting into their mouths; but also so frog does not get impacted with larger heads and other hard insect body parts .
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

i wasnt sure how small to cut any worms so i did small ones, smaller than svl. He's either still stressed or very picky

It's odd, I guess I can consider myself lucky, I've always fed my frogs prey less then the SVL, insects or earthworms, because by that rule, no frog should be eating large locusts or dubias.
I've fed all my frogs this way, and none of them ever had any problem with impaction, they all poop regularly and normal. Also, if feeding accoring to that rule, you'd have to add a ton of prey to the terrarium or feed for a long time. My teen male, is done in 3 minutes of eating, he is 8CM SVL and I feed him locusts with the wings cut off, he eats 3 of these every other day.

I've only had them for one night, tonight being the second. I called up and asked what they've been feeding him, they said frozen silver-side fish.

Don't flinch. Try a worm again later.
