Although I have been assured that my Pyxie's last fecal tested negative for harmful parasites, I know suspect a protozoan/bacterial problem. Vet wants I should bring Frog in (on Tuesday afternoon) for a personal exam so they can (legally) sell me some metronidozale. . .or whatever it is. I've been keeping her in the hospital tank still and disinfecting it daily.
Should I continue with this until I get the anti-bacterial med? She and I both hate the set-up. She's even starting to refuse meals no doubt from the stress I'm being forced to put her through, and showing signs of wanting to burrow despite not having anything to burrow into. Can't say I blame her. What should I do? I don't want to add any coir that I'll just throw away the next day. Too expensive.
Used correctly Metro is effective against many internal parasites. Used incorrectly (overdosing either in quantity or treatment duration) it can mess up the animal's liver and kidneys. What makes you think your frog has a protozoan/bacterial problem now? If it's stressed so much about the present environment, maybe the solution is to return it to it's normal set-up. I get the Plantation Soil 8 QT bricks at less than $7 for the 3x pack. That's a lot of shredded coco should you need to replace it sooner than monthly. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
I sent these pictures to my vet...

And he had this to say...
She does appear to have diarrhea or loose stool. There are many causes for this in frogs. Her fecal flotation was negative for parasites, but certain protozoa would be difficult to diagnose on normal fecal tests. Did they see any pinworm eggs at the previous veterinarian?
Potential causes of loose stool include: any cause of increased urination, protozoal infections, bacterial infections, viral infections, dietary changes.
Many of the causes could be treated with metronidazole. The previous veterinarian may be able to prescribe it for you. Legally, for me to be able to do so, I would need to examine her at some point before prescribing any drugs.
I hate all of this but I don't want her to keep getting reinfected. I mean she can't live with protozoa surely? That was also the last bowel movement she's had yet.
Or do you think her stool was runny just because she's been stressed, like one of the posters in that post above suggested?
Protozoa are seen under a microscope. They usually cause blood in the urine and diarrhea with blood in it.
