    Default New baby toad!

Well, I just acquired a baby american toad on Monday. I believe it to be a girl, but I don't know if you can actually say that at it's stage of life. I keep it in a 10 gallon. (Separate from Lola ) It has already eaten a tiny earthworm and a mealworm. I think I got this taken care of, but is there anything I should know about taking care of baby toads?

What a little cutie. Care is the same for babies as adults, just feed every day and make sure you dust w/the supplements. Keep them separated for 60 days to make sure all is well with the new one.

    You are doing great.

You can also feed flightless fruit flies and pinhead crickets.
And if you get a dubia roach colony started you can feed the smallest nymphs.

mealworms are a bit controversial, I have heard and that mealworms can cause impaction if you feed too many of them.

And just like Gail said you need to start a regimen of dusting the feeders with calcium plus D3 on alternating days and multivitamins for once per week and not as the same time as the calcium.

A month ago I rehabbed a toad very similar size to yours and released it, unfortunately it was missing it's right foot.

I would've kept it but the little fellow was doing so well I didn't feel it was right to keep it.

I didn't get supplements- I can't afford anymore. And I was told you don't have to use it for wild caught toads... is this true?

They need calcium and a multi-vitamin just like any captive amphibian. Especially with a baby!!

    Absolutely Not true.

Wild caught or not they still need the proper diet. and since you can't supply what nature can. you have to supplement.

Don't buy the supplements from the stores, buy on line you will save $$$
and a little goes a long way.

Here is what petsmart is selling.

I love wag.com; their selection isn't the best but they have what I need and 15-20% off on 1st order and tho shipping is a flat $4.99 it's FedEx and usually arrives next day. I got free shipping last time I stocked up, not sure if that's still going on. I've you're wily and cunning and a bit conniving, you can get that new order deal a few times...
Retail me not.com has coupon codes. Tho wag advertises them on front page. Of course you need a PayPal, credit/debit card, or prepaid card to shop online. If you must go to store, Petco has a rewards card that will save you 5% and they'll email you introductory coupon. There's one for petsmart too but don't recall the discount if any.
That out of the way, my goodness you're becoming the toad king over there. That baby looks small enough for Lola or new boy to fit in their mouths. If it looks that way to you, keep em separate til he or she grows. Even Uki, who is not much bigger than Banjo, flicks her with the tongue. Banjo has begun flicking back tho and during dinner time I've seen them flick each other's faces, particularly if it's a supplement night. Last night, Banjo tried to eat Uki's toe. This might just be weird toad aggression since they can't exactly stand up and duke it out. But a lil baby hopping around would look like food and that'd be a sad day all around.
Hope you can acquire those supplements, cuz they grow fast and a growing toad's gotta have proper nutrients to grow up healthy. Think of those itty bitty toad bones. D'awww. <--- that's me thinking of them.
