Default Sad day for me and a baby australian whites dumpy =(

Today I had to put down a baby australian blue phase whites dumpy today due to the fact he ate some live green sheet moss and was unable to digest. It made him all deformed and discolored. He could barely move and was able to identify what was wrong IMMEDIATELY. THis is my first frog death due to substrate eating. Moss was totally not on my list of things not to use as substrate but rather recommended =(

Not sure if I should use moss anymore in my vivariums. I would appreciate some advice from ADVANCED level frog keepers only on this. Thank you.
Im sure Lynn will come to me and say why didn't you use paper towels. =/ (Your such a clean person Lynn haha love you to death for it though.)

    Thanks all,

    Corey

I am incredibly sorry for your loss. It's really difficult when tragedies like this occur.

When it comes to substrate, I keep just regular jungle dirt on the bottom. I don't like anything that has wood chips, splinters, little rocks or ANYTHING like that. Just plain dirt for tree frogs...

No. I chose not to. Not something I had in mind sharing a dead frog on here. After the frog was euthanized I opened it up to find out what EXACTLY was causing the protrusion. HUGE peace of moss. Bigger than the size of crickets he/she normally eats.

    I'm so sorry , Corey !
It's a terrible thing to have to go through. They are so needy

    *************************************

Yes. I do not believe ( most) arboreal tree frogs need any traditional layered / drainage bottom substrate.
They can live happy ever-after-on on brown paper towel/ and a shallow soaking dish.
Bonus -- they find their food!

BTW- ( I use paper towel in the quarantine tanks) For the tree frogs. I use fleece fabric- that gets washed in hot water and a cap-full of bleach ---then put in the dryer to evaporate any left over bleach---soaked in de-chlorinated water and replaced in the enclosure. I keep a big stack of pre-cut sizes to fit the bottoms of my 2 tree frogs enclosures.
It's cheap and very soft for their little tummies. I pull it 3 times a week . It's like the "reptile carpet " idea but can be laundered ! The reptile carpet stuff is rough and can not be cleaned properly; and in fact... disgusting ! The walls / plants of both tanks are cleaned thoroughly /weekly. Lots of work.

Dart frogs are a breeze to keep in comparison !

Yes ----clean ---is good for tree frogs! Especially Agalychnis species

Corey, sorry to read about your baby WTF. I use moss in all may vivs, but I also feed from dishes or tongs (except for the tiny fliers in the AGTF set up). The only dish I found that works well for me in the WTF is this Corning Ware dish. The side are high enough to hold adult roaches, and med/large size crickets, plus they can sit on the tabs if the dish gets to crowded. I've yet to find a loose feeder in their viv.

    Thanks lynn and gail.
Also thanks for the support on the passing guys. This specific case was one of my hardest ones to go through since I had to euthanize myself knowing *I am responsible for the cause of death*

Lynn, is this fleece fabric something I can purchase at MICHAELS? Until then I need to acquire BROWN paper towels. Hmm where to get them =/. HOME DEPOT?

Gail. My babies i will be feeding in a dish from now on like you do. My subadults eat from my hand and LOVE MR. ROACH! hehe so cute =).

You can get the natural paper towel at Whole Foods & Trader Joes. You can most likely find it as your local grocery store also.
