Default Frog Newbie with 1 African Dwarf Frog ...soon to be more

    Hi All,

My son (4yrs) got a betta fish ("Jack Frost") as a b-day present this past weekend. When I went to get it food, my daughter (5yrs) convinced me to get an African Dwarf Frog ("Karate") as a companion. The pet shop guy assured me they were compatible and gave me a jar of frog food.

As soon as I got home I thought
    1. The frog is really cute
    2. I know NOTHING about frogs!

Jack Frost has eaten all food that goes in the tank - whether dropped in or put in a little plate in the aquarium using a turkey baster. I put Karate in his own tank yesterday (4 days after getting him/her) but he still isn't eating. I want to get him 2 buddies (it's a 5 gallon tank) but I want to do it right

Any guidance about how often and how much food to give Karate ... how much/often for 3 ADFs? How often to change the water? Full change/partial change?

    TIA!

Hello and welcome to FF! I prefer not to mix fish and frogs because of potential for problems and injuries. Bettas have different dispositions in community tanks, some are nice and some are not. With sharp teeth to fight other males; a Betta can do some damage on an ADF if it so desires.

An adult male Betta's stomach is around the size of it's eye so do not overfeed it, 3-4 Betta pellets a day is enough. For the frogs, initially feed all will eat in 5 minutes daily and then remove all uneaten food. Once you do that can figure out how much to feed in the future.

If you have no filter, recommend change 50% daily with same temperature dechlorinated tap water. Easiest thing to keep tank clean is a bare bottom that can be easily "vacuumed" with gravel cleaner during the water change. Can also get a small internal foam filter and power it with an air pump. Once the filter is seeded with beneficial bacteria (around 30 days) can then reduce water changes to 50% once a week. Here is a care sheet to help get you started right: http://www.frogforum.net/care-sheet-...warf-frog.html . Good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

    Hi Mentat,

Thank you for responding to all my posts! The 5 gallon aquarium I bought came with a filter - the "Mini Might" filter (picture attached). Is this an OK filter to use?
