    Default Flirtin' Gherkin Update!

Well, after a solid month of nothing but protein, Gherkin has plumped up nicely. He has eaten a total of 48 large earthworms, countless crickets, and two pinky mice in the last 4 weeks. Still won't touch a mealworm, though. He is now on a regular feeding schedule to match my other two. He has also rediscovered the joy of burying himself in the dirt-6 months stuck in a bathtub hindered his natural instinct to dig but he finally got those back legs working. I may be biased, but I think he is a very handsome frog!

Yes, Very handsome indeed. The mealworms don't move fast and Ive noticed it takes a while for any new frogs i have to realize they are food. If mealworms are in a warm temperature they move more or if they have a light on them. Just what I've found so maybe give that a try.

Thanks Ebony. He just doesn't seem interested in the slightest, not matter how much they move. They are pretty small compared to him, so maybe he thinks they aren't worth the trouble? He loves his worms and crickets, though. I don't think he's their favourite, but they seldom have time to complain before they are gone!!

LOL, I bet they don't. Sounds like he doesn't need mealworms anyway. He's getting a good variety. I love his name by the way. very cool.

Wow! He looks fantastic. I love the pics you put up of Pip of Yoki too. I'll say it again, they are sooooo cute. I was going to add some new pics of my Black Eyed Tree Frogs until I saw those, I'm going to wait and leave yours up for a while, I don't have the heart to bump 'em. lol

He looks like he's about to shed in that last photo. Have you tried him with superworms? Superworms are my male's absolute favourite food.

How can you tell when they are about to shed? The last photo was taken a couple of days ago, and so far he hasn't done anything but bury himself a bit deeper. I heard that superwoms can bite and hurt frogs, so I have stayed away from them for the last few months. Switched over entirely to mealworms. Kadesh and Obi love them. However, Gherkin was getting fed every single day for the last month, so maybe he knew something bigger was coming! He's a pretty smart frog.

Thanks Paul! I think they are pretty cute, but then again, I think my cockroaches are cute, too. People think I'm a little weird when it comes to my pets. What can I say?? I would love to see some more pics of your Black Eyed Tree Frogs, though. I am quite taken with those little ones. Just something about them and those big eyes-I have sucker written all over me!! Lol!!

When they get that sort of glazed/plastic-like appearance, it usually means they are about the shed. He probably did it already.

As for superworms, I only ever bother messing with the jaws for small frogs. My 3 African Bullfrogs get them "as-is". In the wild, these guys can eat much nastier things than a superworm.

Okay, maybe I will pick up a small container of superworms. Just for a treat here and there for them. Kadesh will be in heaven if I brought those guys back. Spoiled, I tell you! Gherkin doesn't have the shine anymore, so he might have already done his thing. I will have to remember that and make sure the humidity is up in all the tanks to help them out. Thanks for the tip John!!

He looks like a beast! Very nice.

I'd be surprised if your frog didn't like superworms.
I have a hard time getting mine to eat anything BUT superworms. lol
