Thread: Mold in my white's tank

Default Mold in my white's tank

First off, I would like to find out what kind of mold is in my frog tank. It's an orange-ish color and it only grows on the wood. I have thought about springtails, but I don't know were to buy them.

    1. Do I need to be worried for my frogs?
    2. Is there another way to prevent mold besides springtails?
    3. Will the mold make my frogs feel uncomfortable?

Not sure what kind of mold it is but ANY mold will be-harmful to a frog. I do not get mold in my tank ever so I would say clean the tank and get your frog's out until its cleaned.

Every time I've used wood in my tanks, I've gotten mould growing... never orange mould though, just white mould. I'm pretty sure white mould is harmless, but I'd get rid of the orange mould- bright colours in nature tend to be a warning- "Don't Eat Me!"

I always get rid of mould, but that's just personal preference because I'm a clean freak. It shouldn't bother the frogs, but as I said, its down to personal preference. Whenever you have plant or organic matter in a moist environment, you'll get micro-organisms growing. Boiling logs will kill initial organisms, but won't prevent new ones from growing and breeding.

If dragons were real I'd totally be in on that...

    Hi,
Molds/fungus will not hurt you frog. Unless of course, it's, very extensive.
It is more likely to grow if the humidity is too high or if there is not enough ventilation.
Check the humidity! If you are using a coil type gauge ---replace it with a closed probe gauge when possible.
Ventilation could be increase by using a little computer fan - forcing the air OUT of the tank, of which will reduce the humidity.

    You have a few approaches:
What kind of wood did you use, and how was it prepared. Baked?
You could yank it and do that.

You could just wipe it down and let it run it's course. Use paper towels.

The stringtails will work, but they typically stay close to the surface of the soil.
Springtails can be purchased at Josh's. But, heads-up, they are delicate.

Purchasing springs or isopods at a show might be better.

Yeah, the mold is right on the flat bottom of the wood, and on the surface of the soil, right were the wood is. It is mopani wood and grape wood. I got it from Petsmart. I did not boil it at all.
