I just got two frogs, and do not know what to feed them. They are about 1 1/2 inches long. I do not want to feed them only crickets and I have a small dubia roach colony. PLEASE HELP!
Then feed them dubia.
Can I feed them earthworms? From a pet store?
btw I LOVE your gif
only night crawler pieces 1/2 inch long until the frog gets larger.
cut from the anus side of the worm and it will heal up to feed from again.
do not feed red worms! they make a slime that tastes really bad to a frog.
Can they have mealworms also?
Yes and super worms but as a treat
Ok. I am going to start feeding them roaches and mealworms too. But how many?
Ok. So what is it? Can I feed them mealworms or not?
I wouldn't feed meal worms or super worms to whites.
Crickets , Duba roches (nymphs only) unless your whites is really large. greater than 3 inches snout to vent. (anus)
Night crawlers, red runners (another type of roach) small to medium horn worms.
Wax worms on a limited basis (really fatty)
Pinky mice once a month (No live fuzzies they can hurt your frog when they fight for their life.bite and scratch. )
To make feeding roaches, crickets easy use a small glass bowl buried flush with the substrate.
so your babies don't try to eat the prey though the glass.
The best rule of thumb for feeding frogs is not to feed anything larger than the space in between its eyes.
the only prey item that doesn't adhere to this standard is night crawlers.
Dusting with a calcium+D3 every second feeding and gut loading crickets/roaches with fresh vegetables like kale, karats, broccoli is good.
Do not dust worms it will make a real mess and the worm will put out a lot of slime and the frog will not like it.
Dust with a multivitamin once a week and not on the same day as the calcium.
Following this regimen will prevent metabolic bone disease and short tongue syndrome.
To answer on how much to feed.
1/2in dubia roach nymphs 4 to 8 depending on the size of the frog. or as many they will eat in a 10 to 15min or so.
when they are full they will stop.
if you are feeding via the glass bowl it wouldn't hurt to leave them over night.
but don't let feeders have free roam of the enclosure crickets can bite the frog
roaches will burrow into the substrate and the frog will never find them.
I don't really see a point in feeding "treats". It does nothing for frogs as you wont be feeding them meal worms often enough to cause an impact on the frogs health. I wouldnt waste my money on meal worms tbh. Feed to much of them and you can cause problems with your frog and there is no point at all in feeding "treats" if you have other food items available that are more beneficial.
I will only disagree the the statement below.
I consider a pinky mouse once a month a treat. Or at least my Pack man frog does. He goes nutz over them.
And one of my lager female whites regularly mistakes my finger as a pinky mouse and latches on every once and a while ;-)
Also, do I need to get them from a pet store, or can I get them out of my backyard?
hehe. HEHEHE.
There are many reasons not to use wild caught feeders.
#1 parasites like tape worms and pin worms just to name a few.
#2 Pesticides.
Both can kill or make your pets very sick.
it is your choice spend a few $$ at the pet store or a few more $$$ and setup your own breeding colony of roaches and or crickets.
Or you can spend big $$$$$ at the vet or worse have your pet die.
My vote is to setup a roach colony and possibly sell your excess and make some $$
It is totally up to you.
I thought about that, I just didn't know if it was the same for night crawlers.
How do I start a crawler-colony?
Can I get them from a bait store?
