Default New to forum- have cane toad question

    Hi everyone!
    I'm new here!
I have always kept frogs but have recently branched into keeping toads. I recently acquired 2 cane toads and am having trouble figuring out what sex they are. Anyone have any experience with this? Any tips? Would pictures help?

    Thanks!

Hi, there and welcome. I know there are a few owners of cane toads on here. How is it they are legal to keep as pets? These are the same toads that rapidly produce and kill tons of mammals right? I would think if they escaped it would be a real disaster. Enlighten me please...

Thanks for responding! Cane toads are legal to keep as pets in some states. And I have no intentions of letting them out into the wild to totally mess up the ecosystem! What do you mean by a "flag"?

The flag thing was a joke b/c it wasnt posted under your name yet when I responded. I wasnt sure if cane toads were legal or not, so that answered my question. You will learn lots of great stuff on here. I like your avatar by the way!

I have had my cane toad for a few years now. In the state of Michigan she is inded legal. She has been one of my favorite pets I have ever had. She actually likes to sit in a small wooden rocking chair and I rock her gently. She will crawl back into her chair if I take her off of it. She is a gentle giant of a toad.

The toads dont deserve the blame, the people do. The toads where simply trying to do their job but they couldnt. They couldnt reach a flying insect, so instead they looked for survival elsewhere. You realise we as in us humans and they the toads, are no different? We spread ourselves from the old world to the americas. Just like an invasive species. Humans are also "invasive". We are taking homes of other animals. We use up more space than an imals do. So technically speaking, we shouldnt treat toads like vermin. Cause to the animals we are vermin. Because we are taking their homes of course. Just saying.

    Food for thought eh?

Males can be heard calling and is the easiest and most reliable way of sexing Cane Toads. They also have darker skin on their throat and nuptial pads appear on the first and second fingers during the breeding season. Females are also much bigger and more of a round shape when adults.

Do you have a picture of your toad in the rocking chair? I would LOVE to see that!

Hello, My Gussie use to do that when I first got her, I am thinking she was nervous and thats whay she did this...but I also realize she soaks in alot of water from her bowl when she sits in it for long periods of time...and sometimes it might be the water that she is releasing?? But at other times it coud indeed be urine? I slowly got Gussie use to me holding her. I would gently hold her a little everyday, with an old towel underneath her, so I wouldn't get all wet. Slowly but surely she got the idea that I was her friend and she is now very very calm with me, and doesn't wet nor try to hop away...that is until she gets bored then she will head off on her own for a bit to hop about and explore. The first time I hel her she puffed up like a huge balloon and then she released the air, it sounded ike she was hissing at me...but she stopped doing that right away...she just needed to know that I was her friend...

Rule of thumb, males are significantly smaller than females. Also males nave "nuptial pads", but if you REALLY wanna hit it on the target. Pick both up, and gently press down(not hard it has to be like a nudge VERY VERY LIGHTLY remember its a living being), on the top part. Ussually they would do some sort of release call. I used to do these with american toads when I found em. Also you could just hide and make the conditions good enough for mating(raise temps and humidity and put a large dish of water). Wait till nightime, lower the light a big and if they sit there and start to "sing" its a male.
