My bullfrog hasn't been in his water dish for three days now and hasn't been to the toilet for three days either. He has eaten about 100 crickets, a locust and ten huge pachnoda in the last three days and hasn't pooped any out yet. He is still changing where he sits in his enclosure and is still active and croaking but there is no dirt or soil in his bowl so I know he hasn't been in it. This is the longest he has been without going in his bowl or pooped. Could he be impacted? He is really fat, he looks like a girl bullfrog because his body is so full it makes his head look tiny.
When they change the the location where they burrow it might be a sign that they have left a "deposit" in the hole and want to go some where else.
You might have to go digging for brown gold to confirm.
If you don't find anything then you might want to do a honey soak.
just get a container that has a lid that has a few holes and can be securely put on.
Fill with warm treated tap water to the same hight as the frogs chin and warm it up to 80F
and add 2 to 3 good drops of plain honey and mix.
have a second bath made at the same temp with just treated tap water as a rinse to get rid of the honey.
Put the frog in the honey mixture for at least 20 min. ( now if it is the winter time make sure the water doesn't get below 70F for future ref. )
Trust me they will leave a present.
Hope this helps.
I am not sure but I just did a search for "pachnoda" and it looks like it might have a lot of un-digestible shell parts that might be causing some of the problem.
I would add some large night crawler worms to his diet for a while. Make sure that they have no added scents or coloring for fish bait.
they will act like laxative and provide good nutrition.
Also has there been any major changes in the enclosure tempo or humidity.
just in case you might want to answer the following questions just in case. trouble-enclosure
Everything is the same and nothing has changed. There is definitely no little surprises he has left for me in his previous burying spot. I will try the honey soak but what is the honey actually for?
The extra water and sugar will loosen his colon and add moisture to the bowel.
Just the warm water does the trick but honey adds to the effect.
I do warm water soaks for my pack man weekly as a regimen that he enjoys.
and every time he gets really relaxed and leaves a present behind every time.
it makes him happy and I don't have to clean out the enclosure as often.
1. Size of enclosure There is a pic
2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size difference 5 inch bullfrog
3. Humidity I try to keep it at 70 - 80 but it sometimes goes a bit low
4. Temperature It's night now so I will look tomorrow but it is usually fine.
5. Water - type - for both misting and soaking dish Dechlorinated
6. Materials used for substrate ground coco husk
7. Enclosure set up i.e. plants (live or artificial), wood, bark and other materials artificial plant, water dish
- How were things prepared prior to being put into the viv.
8. Main food source Crickets, locusts, pachnoda, waxworms, canadian worms and sometimes dubias. On rare occasion some morio worms.
9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often) calcium on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and multivitamin on Saturday.
10. Lighting A long tube light from Exo terra at the top.
11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure heat mat and heat bulb
12. When is the last time he/she ate today
13. Have you found poop lately About 4 days ago
14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)
15. How old is the frog just over 2 months I think
16. How long have you owned him/her 2 months
17. Is the frog wild caught or captive bred captive bred
18. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats everyday
19. How often the frog is handled when nessecary like water changes
20. Is the enclosure kept in a high or low traffic area, my bedroom which has a tv and stuff so probably medium, I'm only in there in mornings and night.
21. Describe enclosure maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc) water changes everyday or more if necessary, substrate changed once a month.
Do I need to use honey or will sugar do the trick?
Jack 3 days is not a long time between bowel movements. Especially when your frog has reached 5". Just soak the frog in plain dechlotinated water. The frog will most likely go on its own.
I'm just worried because this is the first time he hasn't pooped every day.
I just don't get how 100 adult crickets and 10 pachnoda can fit inside him, their stomachs must be like car crushers.
I didn't realize you were giving the larva not the adults. LOL
The larva are high fat content so I would feed as treats.
