you could always use white distilled vinegar and/or lemon juice. the acid is normally enough to kill most nasties, but in no way will disinfect. like Lynn, i use bleach. on nasty rescued tanks, i use CLR, then bleach and then rinse numerous times adding Seachem Prime to the water to neutralize the chlorine in the bleach.
