Umm, are his feet touching the glass on the bottom of the tank? Because it sounds like wet skin on wet glass.

Nope, there is almost 8" of substrate underneath him. He makes a similar noise when he's fully buried and I poke the substrate (gently!) to find out where he's hiding.
