Question about plants and soil

I have some devils ivy in my WTF tank. The problem is that there are all these little teenie tiny bugs around the bottom whenever I clean the tank. I put them on something in the cage, but I would like to change the soil. Would it be possible to take all the soil out and use coco fiber as the soil? Or does is need actual dirt? Thanks so much

pothos do not necessarily need soil. as long as it gets watered, it will grow. would it prefer soil? yes, but you can grow pothos in nothing but water. i have done it many times.
