Default We come in Peace :)

    Hey everyone.
I stumbled upon this forum when trying to find proper care for Gray tree frogs. We've owned several tree frogs, and Sampson is 2 years old, our current frog. He lives in a tank with some wood and wood chips on the bottom that are about 1/2 of the tank. he has a dish of water and he gets crickets for food once a week or so.
Hes quite healthy but hes just starting to warm up. the tank is an oval shape, with a blue lid.
anyway, I guess I should be introducing myself and not Sampson. LOL

I'm a gamer girl - I got the name Mrkrabs from the H.C.A. (Hermit crab association) I wanted to get a different type of name so I thought of something.. well.. Crabby, and that just seemed to fit.
I enjoy playing Warhammer (most of the time, that is)
    Yugioh(Not GX - the orginial)
    Hero clix
    Video games, of course lol.
I own roughly 20 hermit crabs, all upstairs in a 44g Crabitat.
Sampson is actually my sisters pet, but I gave the frog dechlorinated water awhile ago and My mom saw me and questioned if it would be better for him or not - so I set out to find information.
Sadly, I've been having trouble finding any care for Gray tree frogs themselfs.
We also have "Pet" Toads in the back yard, they've made residence in our back yard.
they laid eggs in our pond :3 our Fish aren't big enough to want/beable too eat them, so they should be safe.
Anyway, I hope I did alright on this whole introduction bussniuess. Usually I do pretty good, if I do say so myself.
    haha.

    Ciao
    Mrkrabs

Hello and welcome! Gray Treefrogs are a very nice frog to have as a pet. They are very hardy and are voracious feeders. They will usually eat most insects you put in their enclosure, and love to chase and catch moths, flies, small spiders, cockroaches, and small worms. I don't usually have them as pets, but a couple of the guys here know a good deal about them. They should be able to give you more info on them. Good luck!

Welcome aboard. Gray treefrogs rule. Even though I keep plenty of exotic, colorful frogs I still love and miss my gray treefrogs.

    Thank you.

owning Gray tree frogs are great fun. I love it in the summer when my sister wipes down the wall with warm water and lets him crawl all around.

Yeah, he gets flies in the summer when they get really bad my sister runs all over the house catching them and sticking them in his tank.

She'll do anything for her pets. hehe

I am assuming the grays you have are Hyla versicolor and not Hyla chrysoscelis. Am I correct in my assumption?

This mad sound really idiotic, but I don't know really what the difference is. ^^' I went and searched up pictures but couldn't see much of one..

Visually, Hyla versicolor and H. chrysoscelis are the same. There are three ways to know the differences. The first and least likely method to be used by the average person is DNA testing. The second two, are hearing the call of the male, as they are different between the two species and location of where the frog was caught.

I think what Kurt means it that they really are Gray Tree Frogs, and not something else. You can't tell the difference between the two Gray TF species just by looking (anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong). If you mean water for misting then it shouldn't matter if it's tap water but you're better off with dechlorinated tap water. If it's for a water bowl or, like I have, to fill the bottom of the vivarium, then definitely dechlorinated tap water.

    Welcome to the forum!

OK, I think I misjudged what Kurt was asking. Telling the calls apart is not very easy, except if both frogs are present calling at the same time. You're best to go by location unless you have a recording of the call.

What I meant is, if you caught it yourself, then you would know where you caught it and you could use a field guide to figure what species you have. Example - if I caught a gray treefrog in my back yard, I would know it was H. versicolor, because that is the only species of gray treefrog here in New England.
If its male and you happen to hear it call, then maybe you could identify it, providing you know what one or the other sounds like. I do believe I search of the internet can provide some help here. If not there are CD's for sale.
Of course if you bought in a store and the frog never sings, well then its a big mystery.

We found it in Ontario .. I can search up more specific locations later xD

I haven't heard him sing in soooo long, but If I heard it I could probably tell that it was him. My sister could also probably tell, too.
thank you guys so much for your help, by the way. and I have been filling up his dish with dechlorinated water. :3 should we clean out the dead crickets?

    Clean out the dead crickets!

I found this page - it should help as far as the call is concerned.
    http://wwknapp.home.mindspring.com/d...ay.tfrogs.html

Range maps in both the Audubon and Peterson's field guide include both species in the the range map with no distinction of their different ranges.

The Hyla versicolor is what our gray treefrog is, I think.
I listened to the calls and that sounds soooo much like him.

and I'll be sure to get the dead crickets out of there sooner or later.

Hello Mrkrabs and welcome to the forum! I have a Gray Tree Frog myself...though I'm not sure which of the 2 species he is....(He was found in Oklahoma)...I have heard his call before...but it happened when I was asleep and was woke up by him. If somebody had some sound clips of the 2 species...maybe I could indentify his species type.
