My male ACF engages in amplexus with my female almost every day, but she hasn't laid eggs yet. What can I do to "trigger" pregnancy?
Try raising the temperature a few degrees just for a day or two. My frogs had never laid eggs until just recently. Its really hot outside and I had turned the AC off for a day. The very next day I had eggs and now tadpoles. The temperature of my tank is usually about 73 degrees and the day I turned off my AC my tank got up to 80 degrees. IM assuming that temperature change and the eggs are directly correlated.
Males are happy to amplex regularly, they have to wait for the females to become gravid though. to get mine to breed i generally give them a cold water change to see if the females are triggered .
How long does it usually take for the female to become gravid?
An adult female may lay and become gravid within a month or so, though its not recomended to breed them all the time as it wears them out. If your female has not layed before she may be too young. If you just feed her all the worms she wants she will bulk out and lay when she is ready. Water changes can trigger them when they are gravid.
So would you recommend feeding a bit more than usual?
I max my females out with worms, they get all they want and lay often, I have to seperate them from the males so they dont over breed.
