How many do you all buy per visit? I found this bait shop that sells a dozen for $4 in one container. Do you guys normally buy more than one pack and refrigerate or they go bad?
If you are only feeding one or two frogs, one container should last you a week or so.
Yea but I wanted to reduce trips to the shop, if I buy two dozen do you think they'll go bad? How long do they live?
If you refrigerate them they can last for awhile. It's hard to give an exact time though because you never know really how old they are when you buy them.
Make sure night crawlers are healthy with no red bumps or sores on them. Keep them cold on the trip home, specially if long. Maintain them in ref (I place them on veggie bin) on the same container the store sold them in.
If substrate dries up do spray or add a bit of dechlorinated water. If substrate start crusting up on the top from worms slime, remove and dispose of that crust, and replace with used coffee grinds (worms eat) or shredded coco if you do not drink coffee. $4 is a bit on the high side unless they are huge; my local Walmart's sell 18 for $3 and change. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
So after going to 4 different places, I found these. They were $4.27 with taxes. It sucks my two local walmarts only had DMF Big Red Worm and since it did not say night crawlers anywhere on it, I did not get those from there because I thought they would be red worms.
( @Carlos: Do your walmart nightcrawlers come from DMF and say "night crawlers on it" instead of Big Red Worms?")
They look pretty fat. What can of dirt do these came in? It has like some chunks as you can see in the picture and its dark. I also bought another pack from a different bait shop for almost the same price but they are a lot skinnier. They look fine to me, what do you think?
So coffee grinds? Is that the actual "leftover" coffee ? I don't grind my coffee, I buy the one that is already in powder =/. Is this necessary though?
take into consideration that you don't feed whole worms. So 12 will last you longer than it does me.
and I buy them every two weeks. So you might get almost a month out of 12 if you cut them when you need them and don't cut the same one more than 2 or 3 times.
But if you feed you frog well it will grow quickly.
My frog gained 35g in a little over one month.
Hahaha, that's a pretty big jump. I ended up buying two dozen but whatever. I hope they live long enough hahah. Thanks for that tip of not cutting the same one more than 2-3 times. I had no clue about that one. I hope this turns out to be better than gutloading/feeding crickets!!!
I'm going on my third week with my worms. Buying some more on Friday. I'm down to only 2 or 3 left.
Yes they come from DMF, container has an unmarked white top and the SKU is: 8440318001. Maybe you give them that SKU and they can get some in store. BTW, had the price wrong before. It's $2.96 plus your tax for 18 worms and they are usually big.
Those look good. When not extended the big ones are 4-5 in. long and 1/4 in. thick. Yes, thats the actual leftover grinds after making your coffee (not instant). Worms eat that (and newspaper, veggies, etc.). You do not need to feed if stored in ref, but if you take crusted soil out can replace with that. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Well, I was able to feed about 3 medium/small sized night crawler pieces to my baby but I noticed something weird. I don't know why he looks a little bloated to me...as he was eating( and this only happened tonight) he kept doing these weird movement with his hind legs, closing his eyes shut, and rotating in place. I just found it very odd, not sure if he was accomodating his food or maybe it was a first nightcrawler type of thing or something was bothering him.
He has not moved much in the past two days and has not burrowed himself either. He just sits there, uncovered. I did read on a different post about constipation and impaction; so I checked both his left and right sides and they were not hard. I kinda "poked" it a bit with the rubber tongs and did not feel it hard. Even though he looks bloated to me, both sides seem asymmetrical in size. Any thoughts?
I know Mojo always kinda shifts himself around after eating. It looks kinda weird when he does it, but I know what your talking about. As for not digging during the day I don't know. I know that they dig deeper to thermoregulate so maybe your temps are just right for him to stay atop. Does his color look paler than normal?
But Grif, can they shed so early? I don't know if you have seen the pictures I posted. He is about 2 1/2 inches yet not sure how old he is. He's bigger than other babies I've seen so maybe around 3-4 months?( I bought him being a baby going juve I guess) He did this this "leg-cramp" looking move with his hind legs, rotated a bit and closed his eyes shut as he swallowed and all while he was eating.
Is it normal that he has not burrowed himself? I always maintain temps or 80-82 during the day and 77-78 at night. Danfrog mentioned that if temps are good enough, frogs won't do it?
they shed all the time, 2.5" is not early
to the second Q yes it is normal, as long as he looks good and eating on his own, whatever he does is normal for him.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
How long do these usually take to reach full growth?
Ahhh I see. The store told me they had him for around 2 months prior my purchase. I wonder how old he/she is.
So after last night's dusting with night crawlers, he looks like Scarface's Tony Montana. Is it okay for some Ca powder to stay around his mouth or I should rinse it? I don't think he likes his vitamins![]()
