Possibly adding a Leopard frog tadpole to my frog family?

went to pick up some food for my FBTs today, when i noticed what looked to be a tadpole swimming alone in its own tank in the aquarium section of petsmart. I asked about it and sure enough its a leopard frog tadpole that came in by mistake with an order of feeder fish. Giving serious thought about dusting off one of my tanks in the garage, beefing up on leopard frog care and bringing the little guy home tomorow to raise.

I have no experience with Leopard frogs (or raising a tadpole for that matter) but the opportunity is quite enticing. Im going to read up on them in the Care Articles section but if anyone wants to add some extra advice please feel free, itll be much appreciated

Hi Jay! Recommend set-up a tank as for a fish, and if available, use a bit of filter media from an established tank. If no filter and tank is small, recommend changing 50% of water daily to prevent dangerous ammonia levels. For food some pet stores have tadpole food, or use flakes or pellets with spirulina, or high in veggie matter. The care article mentions a bit about tadpoles in its breeding section, good luck !

Whatever you do don't put the tad in with other frogs. I made the big,huge mistake of putting four (unknown) species of tads in my semi-aquatic tank containing my Lithobates palustris. The tads thrived for three weeks then were eaten by my frog. I assume they were eaten because they disappeared completely. My intention was to remove them once they began growing their legs,but alas they never made it that far.I hate those life lessons like that. They did clean up the algae very nicely. Leopard frogs were always my fave as a kid.I also want to thank you for giving me a great insight on how to find new tads without slogging through streams and ponds under the broiling summer sun. I will be checking with my local pet stores to see if any hitchhikers come in with their feeder fish. Good luck with your new tad.
