I found this little fella on my deck just a short while ago and I'm wondering what these black patches are and if it may need some medication...anyone have any thoughts? frog seems to be okay but I did take in several gray tree frogs over the winter and recently released them..this one may've been in that group.
They are the chameleons of tree frogs

I've only seen dark grey but I've also seen them described as 'black'. Smaller black areas is definitely common, but the pattern of black seems messed up, so it looks like it may just a messed up colouring. The skin looks otherwise healthy from the photo.
I have also seen a Rana clamitans that was nearly jet black when it was small and as it grew it ended up with blotchy black areas like your frog. I managed to see it 3 years in a row ending up as a full sized adult so my belief was it was healthy (last picture is below). I think this falls under the 'melanistic' or 'partially melanistic' category but I don't know much about pigment defect nomenclature.
Definitely could be a pigment issue U.C.(thanks for those pics it does look very similar) just haven't seen aything like it before, and I've seem hundreds if not thousands of these grays. Hopefully I'll be able to see this guy again to monitor how he's doing or maybe I'll take him in for a short time to be sure its not an illness.
Anyone seen this in grays?
